Hey guys! I am 23 year old student from Southern Finland. I have grown up in a quite conservative family full of religious values.

But now i consider my self left-wing. I oppose capitalism and neo-liberalism, as well as right-wing.

Hope to have fun here!

Hi and welcome to the forum! :)
There are quite a few Finnish comrades here and we also have a Finnish language subforum: http://www.revleft.com/vb/suomalainen-finnish-f265/index.html

Welcome to the board!
I've heard from a mate in Finland that the church is practically dead. Even though there is a state religion, it sounds like religious attendance is extremely low. Wikipedia even says it drops by 1% a year.
Plus, Finland produces some damn fine metal bands I like (see: Norther, Eternal Tears of Sorrow, Kalmah, Swallow the Sun, etc.)

Anyway, glad to have you here.

Yeah.. The church in Finland is a dead corpse.. The crappy thing is that if you parents baptise you, it means that you will be forced to stay as a church member and pay the tax until you are 18.

You have no idea how much I hate to defend the Finnish state church, but they don't really 'force' you to stay in there. You only need parental consent to resign and even most religious families in society as secular as Finland are probably going to give their consent. I think I resigned when I was like 17. Of course, if your family was an exception, it's a tragedy and another reason to point out how the state church system is a horrible farce.

Anyways, imo, religious factions should be treated like political parties in law: when kid hits 15, he/she makes his/her own decision instead of parents making him/her join when the kid's barely even conscious of its own existence. Not only is that questionable due to the fact that kid has no way of consenting to joining, but this fucked up law is also pretty much solely keeping the state church from plunging into irrelevancy.

Yeah.. I also hate the "confirmation" farce where children are being bribed to stay in the church by their families..

I confirmated. I hated it, but didn't mind the new camera and 50 euros. Totally worth sitting a while in a church and betraying everything I believe in.

oh wait :(
