Well hell, if Box sets count,
chalk up Robert Johnson, B.B. King, and Muddy Waters box sets for me
Whats Going On is a great album, as was the one after that (more sensual=less political, though)
James Brown Live at the Apollo is another excellent choice i totally forgot about. I almost added Say it Loud but It was a hard choice
And the Beach Boys!?
They fucking rock. The most misunderstood and under-billed band of all time. Without the Beach Boys, The Ramones would have never been. There progressions and melodies in general are hundreds of times more complicated than what their lyrics would have led one to think.
Wilson Pickett is excellent as well, his "Stagger Lee" cover is hands-down the best.beats out even Fat's
Bob Dylan. I forgot him somehow. What a shame. If only the Grateful dead covered "Subterranean Homesick Blues." That would be the best song of all time. hands down. with their jam power and his lyrical ascension it would have been unstoppable. They did do some live work in the 80's together, oddly enough.
I guess "Do You Wan't More!?!? (my punctuation marks are fucked up, no doubt)" is a roots album, I'm probably wrong though. The little Roots I've heard was good though. In fact, I know Im wrong, so let me know what this is, man, I have read a review of it somewhere.
edit: Goddamit! I forgot Thelonius (Straight, No Chaser) and David (hmm...*****es Brew wins my vote)

Yea man, Do you Want More?! is a Roots album, my favorite. I know it's kinda cheesy but I get some reviews from the jerks who buy it off Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000003TB6/qid=1063250432/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/103-1644660-4987041?v=glance&s=music) , some are pretty funny and they list all the songs, if I want to sample them ;) before purchase.
And I had to throw that Box Set in there, I like so many Sam Cooke songs to choose one album so I picked one with 3 discs, cause I can do that.

I do the same thing sometimes. Unless its some specific "niche" music that nobody understands, like Dub!
anyway, I have heard some of the Roots and they sound (not to hurt hip-hop fans) much more advanced than the standard, implementing quite a few different kinds of music into their sound.

I just noticed this thread... MINE, in no particular order:
1 “A Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis (It's Miles Davis.. No need to ask)
2 “Black on Both Sides” by Mos Def (I love Hip-Hop.. Mos is my favorite)
3 “Black Star” by Black Star (The epitome of perfection.. Mos & Talib? En fuego, verdaderamente)
4 “Quality” by Talib Kweli (It's Talib... He's hot [musically!!])
5 “Urban Hang Suite” by Maxwell (He's so romantic, I'm in love with him)
6 “Embrya” by Maxwell (This, to me, is his best album. He makes beautiful "love-making" music)
7 “Voodoo” by D'Angelo (Great voice and good lyrics.. "Untitled" makes me wet every time ;) )
8 “The Score” by The Fugees (The best rap group ever, in my humble opinion)
9 “Dreaming of You” by Selena (She's a Tejana legend and her music was fun. She was a beauty)
10 “Live” by Erykah Badu (This is my soul sista! This is a beautiful album, for real)
11 “Amor Prohibido” by Selena (The greatest example of Tex-Mex music)
12 “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” by Lauryn Hill (She's so deep. I love this girl.)
13 “Legend” by Bob Marley & the Wailers (No need for explanation)
14 “When The Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight and He'll Win The Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring There's No Body to batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest Of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right” by Fiona Apple (I love vagina music. Fiona Apple was my favorite artist for quite a few years. This album is great, and YES, that is the entire title, I swear! I actually have it memorized)
15 “Unplugged” by Alejandro Sanz (He's so sexy.. I don't have to understand every single word that he sings, but he still makes me want to make love)
16 “Putumayo Presents Cuba” by Various Artists (A good mix of modern Cuban sounds)
17 “Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer” by Ibrahim Ferrer (This old man cuts the fuck up! He's awesome)

ANYTHING by Ozomatli
"songs in A minor" by Alicia Keys
"Brown Sugar" by D'Angelo

Well, Jamiroquai is not really one of my favorites, but I wanted to diversify my list. And what's wrong with Maxwell? He's a bit D'Angelo-esque, only has a higher voice at times :P . Yeah, actually, I had Jill Scott in the list, but I took her off to add someone else... And I forgot to add her to the other people that I like...
But Maxwell is the shit. :) And he's hot.
Others:
"Who is Jill Scott?" by Jill Scott
"from the choirgirl hotel" by Tori Amos
"Buenos Hermanos" by Ibrahim Ferrer
"Tribute to the Cuarteto Patria" by Eliades Ochoa

don't quote me on the classifications - just did them for people who might not know some of the bands
Nurse With Wound - Man With the Woman Face (experimental/surrealist music)
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (jazz)
Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals (more or less rock with some industrial influences)
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks (more or less folk)
Coil - Love's Secret Domain (perverted acid/house/industrial/technoid esoteric strange things)
Coil - Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil (noise... sort of industrial since they were industrial pioneers from the late 70's on)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (psychedelic rock)
Prick - Prick (produced partly by Trent Reznor of NIN fame... Great lyrics - rock with electronic stuff and some lofi approaches)
Depeche Mode - Singles 86-98 (dont listen to them that much anymore, that's why i put the singles... synth-pop i guess)
Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral (more or less industrial with weak to strong links to rock)
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (less industrial less rock... ;-P nice instrumentals, great dynamics )
Nirvana - In Utero (i love it for his short lyrics... remind me of Issa's haikus - awesome - supposedly grunge)
Aphex Twin - Richard D. James Album (IDM (intelligent dance music)/'electronica'/ambient -- weird bleeps, crazy drumstuff)
Leonard Cohen - Songs of Leonard Cohen (more or less folk... all of them)
Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man
Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough (sort of IDM/ambient again)
Leonard Cohen - Songs of Love and Hate
Leonard Cohen - The Future
Portishead - Dummy (trip-hop i guess.... sort of film noirish close to dumb'n'bass (i'll leave that typo for amusement) )
The Doors - LA Woman (dunno.... psychedelic rock?)
The Doors - Strange Days
The Cure - Disintegration (more or less goth... Bloodflowers is awesome, too... nice humor. :) )
Clint Mansell - Requiem For a Dream (original movie score) (awesome... the reason why i watched the movie - great movie, too)
David Gray - White Ladder (sort of electronic new folk...)
Tool - Lateralus (dark art-rock-metal sort of)
Coil - Time Machines (4 drony tones to induce trance/zoned-outness/travel in time - minimalist ambient i guess)
Coil - Musick to Play in the Dark vol.2 (again not really traditional songs, moon musick, electronic, soothing some noisy parts)
Coil - Moon's Milk (in Four Phases) (originally released as four ep's (spring/summer/autumn/winter) recorded at the solstices and equinoxes... pretty cool ambient/strings/noise)
Brahms - Hungarian Dances (more or less classical music)
Alec Empire - Intelligence and Sacrifice (first cd noise-rock in the vein of Atari Teenage Riot, second cd Ambient/noise experiments..)
more than 20 cause of multiple albums by single artists... :P
i forgot radiohead's ok computer (and its string tribute, which rocks, too), as well as the velvet underground's first and lou reed's berlin... various beatles/richie havens/bob marley/lamb/air/massive attack/placebo/led zeppelin/ratm i own and like, too. ;)
Edit: I hope you won't have to scroll cause of me.

Jah, man! Should listen to Holy Wood, a great combination of songs, with a couple of hard rock and rolls, some slow tunes with outstanding lyrics, and some songs somewhere in the middle..... Good album... ;)

yeah, i might put it back into my cd player today when i am at my apartment. ;) Or i might put it on right now since i converted it to mp3 a while ago, together with most of my other albums, GAOG/POAAF/ACSS among them... Just kidding, yeah I like Holy Wood, too, but sometimes it doesn't seem dense enough somehow... That's why I listed Mechanical Animals... Coma White is one of my favorite songs... Lamb of God is awesome, too, though. Nice hommage to John Lennon.
