This should be in every high school and college campus across the world.

The new SDS is coming a long way from when they started back up again in 2006. I think they'll be a leading force again.

<<I think they'll be a leading force again>>
so do I! makes me wish to be a student again! (and I need to be too, looking at that huge grammatical mistake in the title.)
Some great campaigns!

Does anyone know how many chapters they have? I can't seem to find the list. But according to the google map, the mid-west US is in some serious need for some chapters!!

I really thought they had chapters all over the US. I dont think there is any socialist group around where I live..Louisiana is taken by neoconservatives and bullshit liberals.

As far as I understand, community colleges can have SDS chapters as well. So you could be a part-time student and still work with SDS in your community without shelling out the X-thousand dollars for full-time tuition.

Does anyone here know how I could go about contacting the University of Pittsburgh branch of the SDS? I've tried 3 listed emails I found online, but they either didn't work, or were unresponsive.

I used to be in a high school SDS group. It was basically an environmentalist group. I wouldn't be surprised if many high school SDS chapters aren't radical at all.

A lot of SDS chapters are totally inactive/non-existant now. It pretty much died out alongside the anti-war movement, since it essentially was the college wing of the anti-war movement in a lot of ways.
I think there should have been a stronger attempt to make SDS have clearly defined politics, and I think they should have tried to be more involved in student politics, not just then anti-war movement or activisty type stuff.

I have no idea what the situation at the Univ. of Pittsburgh is but my guess is that they have a formal faculty mentor (required of most organized student groups at private universities). Find out who that is and try to get in touch with them - it is part of their job to be responsive to these inquiries.

Thats a real shame.
What are the politics and ideology (if any) of the SDS?

SDS is still alive and going. It is true a lot of chapters died out along with the anti-war movement, but we are still around. I'm in Alabama and I believe our state has two chapters now. Also, while liberals and social democrats are welcome to join I have found radicals are much more common. There are always radicals on campus so if you start a chapter and advertise then people will definitely join. Even a chapter of 3 or 4 is better than none!

SDS is a mixed bag, my chapter in particular is pretty decent, mostly Marxists and anarchists with a few (like two or three) democratic socialists. We're actually in the process of planning a solidarity action.
Hopefully the events in Wisconsin will inspire people to get active again.
