I dont think people are becoming less political I just think that people choose not to make it public if you know what I mean.

And in some High Schools you arent taught anything about politics so people are having to research it and get to know it in their spare time and later in life.

I think schools should have current politics as a subject.

I think George Bush's arrogant march to imperial war in Iraq has actually made quite a few around my part of the country more political. We had hundreds show up at anti-war demonstrations, and over a thousand people turned up for at least one or two of the bigger rallies. A protest in Rome drew up to 2.5 million, which if I am not mistaken was one of the largest political demonstrations ever in that very old city. You had a half-million to a million protesting in New York City, in London, in Madrid and Barcelona, and on and on.

I do that this year, it is a subject you can choose to do once you're doing A level's (SAT's). Not only is it to do with current affairs but with how British and Irish government is run, as well as historical politics and political ideologies (including "study of minority groups such as Communists" ;) ).

Yes, people are becoming politically apathetic, the voting population shows that.

It depends what you mean by political.

I'd say that everything is politics, so it's bassically impossible to not be political. What I find dissconserting is that, people not knowing enough about their political decisions, don't even realize that what the're doing is political. To me, that is what makes our current democracy not even worth it.

The media will hype the masses up on so called "issues", and then the main stream politicains work around them. You evebtually end up with perfectly intellegent people voting for the US DEMOCRATS  :P , or people in canada voting for the NDP, or the liberals  :P .

More or less is a relative term. In 1992 voter turnout was high. Many of the disenfranchised turned out to vote for what they hoped would be a turnaround in American politics, manifested in Bill Clinton. The turnout was similarly high in 1996. In 2000, there wasn't any one canditate that particularly energized the populus at large. Although, I think that most people are chomping at the proverbial bit to get out and cast a ballot against Bush and his henchmen. His botching of foreign policy to the nth degree has pissed so many people off that recent polls have shown that an un-named Democrat would beat Bush if the election were held today.

Right now people in cali are more "political" then ever. there's gonna be like record highs of voter turnout coming up soon but that's only cus people want to participate in the historic recall that might never happen again-ever. So no, people aren't less political now. cali politics are less political.

Political awareness fluctuates and is often tied to world events i.e. natural catastrophies, war, famine etc.

But political consciousness is growing. Where I live, students seem to be increasingly concerned with political issues that involve their own future, the 11th general elections are coming soon, and our premier of 22 years is stepping down on Nov 1, 2003.

Issues concerning affirmative action and university entrance policies are fiercely debated in more arenas than before, and I think the anticipated growth of independence of the local media (our first Internet newspaper (malaysiakini.com (http://www.malaysiakini.com)) started in 1999 and I'm happy to have been part of that :) )and a host of other 'positive' issues is, hopefully, a precursor of change.

I've always conceded that urban Malaysians have been apathetic, and most of them still are, but now people's perceptions about many things have radically changed, and although the political situation here is mostly a delicate case of appeasing the three predominant races i.e. Malays, Chinese and Indians, I feel that it's my generation that will finally lift us out of the boghole and get some serious shit started. :)

There is a political front coming in from the northeast. Later in the afternon there will be scattered political showers. The forecast for tomorow will be mostly right-wing with some pseudo-leftists in the early evening. Later this week we'll be looking at a communist storm heading our way from the south. We can expect strong winds of up to 60 mph and about 10 inches of rain. :D
