That's a huge question, and many on this board will be happy to go into detail about the specifics of social democratic support for imperialism. It's history worth knowing. Refromist politics have often been linked to taking of problems at home while terrorizing the colonized.

The vanguard of revolutionary politics in France in the 1950s actively opposed the war against Algeria. The social democrats and the bulk of Stalinists didn't.

I think Lenin's greatest contribution was his consistent anti-imperial and anti-colonial stance, linking national struggles to the international class struggle.
