"The Foggy Dew" is a personal favourite of mine. I think you can always tell a great song by its versatility, and any song that can work as both a furious rebel anthem and a solemn lament certainly makes a strong case for itself.

And let's throw in a bit more Luke Kelly in there, while you're at it. Can't beat a bit of Luke Kelly.

I think this one might be a jack, musically speaking, of Johnny Cash's "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky," although I don't know since I can't seem to find any info on when "The SAM Song" was actually written and it's been recorded by at least a half dozen artists. It's still one of my favorites, which is ironic since the pIRA never actually used any surface-to-air missiles, lol...

And one about the Hunger Strikers that'll probably depress the shit out of everyone...

I find it ironic that we're posting songs praising bourgeois nationalists on a forum entitled "RevLeft". ;)

This, surely, is more our flavour?:

Ermm I'm not sure what you're talking about, considering that there was no such thing as a Catholic bourgeoisie in the North during The Troubles (which was historical context from which the songs I posted originated, never mind that 3 of the "10 Brave Men" were INLA, lol) which was partly what all the fuss was about. The other fuss, obviously, was/is the border which one could choose to characterize as nationalist. Or, one could recognize that in order for working class liberation to take place in the North that British imperialism had to be destroyed as it was the primary mode of class oppression employed there.

Now, whether you buy the Provo line about creating a 32 county socialist republic or you side with the criticism of the Officials, INLA and their respective supporters insofar as that the language was only a tactic used to seduce working class Northern Catholics into volunteering is something altogether different. However, what can't be denied is that this thread isn't supposed to be about that.

Well, just to clarify, I did not mean to say that the Provos were bourgeoisie- they obviously weren't- but that their ideology was bourgeois. That should be illustrated quite neatly by the financial support they got from Irish and Irish-American capitalists, something which the more sincerely socialist INLA were deprived of. (Not, of course, that I have much respect for the INLA, who, however sincere they may have been, were entirely ineffectual as a vehicle for working class revolutionism, and wasted a lot of innocent lives proving it. Honestly, the quote in my sig pretty much sums up my opinion on sectarian conflict.)

ANYWAY! Back to the music...

I think it depends on what segment of the Provos you're talking about when you call their ideology bourgeois... That might be a fair criticism of the leadership, but somehow I doubt pIRA's rank and file would have seen it that way. And I feel pretty much the same way about INLA, what with machine gunning unarmed Protestant church goers and all that. There's a reason why Bernadette Devlin high tailed it outta the IRSP almost as quickly as she refounded it, after all, lol... At any rate, I think you and I basically see eye to eye on this issue even if it is from across the room, lol...

And you're right, best get back to the music.
