What is it? I know I have not heard a word of communists taking a role in anything, but then again the finnish communist party could topple the entire government and win the elections with the media just talking vaguely about "dissidents". So what is the truth?

I'm not sure about your madcap ideas about Finland ...
Anyway. In the Arab world socialists have been involved and there are some noteworthy communist groups about (they were major in Tunisia). However they lack the mass support to lead any movements (you know ... kinda like communists in Finland ...) and have been content to cheer on the protests and encourage people to take part but do not try to direct them or move them towards socialist ends.
Just like most communist movements at times like these. :(

What about the Workers Party in Algeria? I don't know how big their role are in the protests, but I know it's one of the biggest opposition parties down there. Anyone who knows what's happening to them?

Well, wherever there are unions and strikes there are usually communists playing some role.
