A lot of implications. Extremism theories have been rampant in Germany for some time, and lead to such things as Antifas not being allowed to protest against Nazi activity on campus because "the left isn't really better than the right".

The German state is conducting extensive research on "preventive youth work" with the goal to stop youngsters from becoming "right or left extremists".

Prepare to be equated to Nazis constantly and shut down everywhere. Extremism theories fucking suck.

"Protests, student societies, displays of notices, distribution of literature and the impact of electronic communications were cited as "challenges" to universities in their balancing of free speech against other rights and responsibilities".Thats going to hurt left wing societies....oh shit:(

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the student protests. Nothing at all. Just the nasty evil terrorists. Yep.

What's more important is that this isn't something new - not even the faces behind it. UCL Provost Malcolm Grant, the chairman of this review, alongside other university officials, has been working on the policy for application for over a year, more than ready to sell students up the river. Indeed, the UCL students union did just that, when they handed over the names of over 800 Islamic Society members to the Met police (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/cia-given-details-of-british-muslim-students-1932727.html). There's a really good article here (http://www.revolutionarycommunist.org/index.php/britain/1862-spies-on-campus.html) which details the stuff behind it.

Especially in light of the criminalisation of student protestors, this is something that we will need to really fight back against.

well looks like the student protests have got them rattled - so they pull out the "evils of islam" and "terrorism" cards as an excuse to crackdown on protest- real evil is fees...

Demanding an end to poverty, inequality and dictatorship is extreamism in the eyes of the law. They'll be pursueing an anti-left agenda.

Writing off both left and right as "extremism", in addition to its vapid simple-mindedness, is a massive fallacy on at least two counts - it's a case of the Golden Mean fallacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_to_moderation) as well as presenting a false dilemma between good little consumer who work within the system and rabble-rousing types are are probably terrorists too.

Like an critic said about the German extremism debate mentioned by staatsfiend; "the radical left burns cars, the right burns people. The fact that they both set fires shouldnt be the primary thing you judge them on."

When leftists have pushed for the state to censor rightists the methods and tools are often used against the leftists themselves.

Liberal exceptionalism? Would that be a term for it?

Extremism theories make me fucking sick.
Beyond anything else, they're ridiculously self-involved; it basically reduces the concept of political alignment to a measure of how much you agree with the Centrist in question, which is worse than useless.
