I think so. I think if you go to certain sites you can, just like downloading mp3s and such.. I think that I don't know anything. I think I'm not advocating anything.

Been thinking about getting one of the used older ones for a while, but don't feel like spending the money.

For those that don't know what they are.

I paid $200 after taxes for the one with free 3g. The books that you buy on the Kindle store aren't going to be much cheaper than their normal counterparts on average, but you can get a ton of free ebooks online and can also download ebooks and .pdf files of books on the internet. One site that has a ton (~33,000) free eBooks is Project Gutenberg (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCYQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gutenberg.org%2F&rct=j&q=project%20gutenberg&ei=yn9cTevzIIH98AbJh5ynDg&usg=AFQjCNEwWvhQCQqfxd5f1CbKz4kDmWOgtw&sig2=flBJBNSqW2leKcovda2_qA&cad=rja), which you can also read on your computer, btw.

An eBook is just a computer file, so yes, you can download eBooks just like any other pirated books online (i.e. torrents).

Damn thats sick. I might buy one for school, once I start going anyways. I heard textbooks are 40% off if you buy them as an ebook.

This. Kindle's are a total waste. Couple of hundred bucks for the privilege of paying extra for a book (eBooks are actually more expensive most of the time) or reading the same free crap you can get on the desktop or laptop PC you're gonna own anyway. I've heard all kinds of dumbass enviro arguments in favor of them as well, namely, "But look how many trees I'm saving!" Sure buddy, and how many toxic chemicals did it take to make that damned thing? Also, the trees you're saving are two tears in a bucket. It would take many, many millions stopping buying books to make a dent, and then the tree saving benefit will surely be offset by the amount of batteries (also containing toxic chemicals) that needed disposing of afterward.

I don't have space for my books, which I am selling. I love books, and plan on owning quite an extensive collection when I have both the money and the space for them (maybe if I ever buy a house) but right now I don't.

I'm also going to be traveling extensively over the next couple of months/years, and to have thousands of books at my fingertips in an easy to read and convenient product, along with free unlimited 3g wireless, incredible durability and an insane amount of battery life, makes this perfect for me.

In short, it might not be for you, but you're a fucking idiot if you think it's useless.

Fucking idiot.

Well, reading laptop screens hurts my eyes and I wouldn't actually pay for any of their overpriced books. I would just steal them off the internet. I agree that buying kindles isn't going to help the environment worth shit though.

Well, reading laptop screens hurts my eyesPlus this:

Laptop:
-Turn on. Hope that it's charged
-Wait for it to boot up.
-Navigate with your mouse to the website or the file on your computer.
-Read for 4 hours until it has to be charged, your eyes hurt, using the trackpad and arrow keys is annoying
-Wait for it to charge before another use

Kindle:
-Take it out of your bag.
-Slide the power switch on the bottom to have it either immediately jump back to the page you were last at and continue reading or
-Navigate to the title in the main list, select it and start reading
-Read until you are satisfied and either just leave it be or slide the bar at the bottom to put it to screensaver. You don't have to worry about turning it off because it's always off when it's not switching pages
-Also, it's easy to use. no trackpad or mouse. Everything's designed as simply as possible.
-Charge the battery in 1 month or more, as the Kindle only uses energy when transferring between pages and is actually off when you're on a page.

Oh and don't forget about durability and free 3g.

In short, Kindles are better than a laptop in every single way for reading books. It's just a question of whether or not you think that "betterness" is worth the cost of purchasing a Kindle.

Still doesn't explain why you don't just use the laptop I'm sure you already own or the local library you have access to for free... The fact is, there is absolutely no justification you can come up with for owning one other than possessing some cool new eStatusSymbol. There's absolutely no problem buying a Kindle can solve that can't be solved without buying one. I mean really, how many books can you read at once anyway? Besides, I have 3G access to the internet from my 4 year old cell phone that I bought refurbished (IE second hand). Nice that a difference of opinion makes you a genius and me a fucking idiot, though. Now trot on, trendy ass.

Edit:

Library books do all of this, for free. Well, except for the internet part, which I already own 4 other devices for.

You do know what a laptop is right? When you figure out how to recompile a DVD on your Kindle, let me know.
