View Full Version : In defense of Justin Bieber

I won't be able to recognize his songs if it hit me over the head. And after he spurned teh interwebz invitation to rock Pyongyang, I have been less enamored with this character.
Still, this was a relatively clever article I read. The gist of it is that Bieber actually cares about his music, seeks a connection with his audience in the way other pop sensations of recent times don't, and that in fact there's a certain authenticity to his approach:
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/02/12/why-adults-are-scared-of-justin-bieber/
Is that just hype? If so, what are some concrete counter arguments that don't rely on the usual criticisms the article notes?
I have no idea whether this is at all a defensible view and don't know if this means Bieber is someone to watch - much less his lyricist. I have no way of judging. Should skeptical people look up his music videos or is it a waste of time? What do comrades here think?

He looks kind of like my friend's younger brother, who would barge in on my friend and I when we were smoking pot at his house. Plus Bieber has stupid hair. Plus his music sounds like the usual insipid R&B-influenced pop crapola that you hear everywhere, only it comes from what looks like a recent graduate from elementary school this time.

What annoys me worse than overly obsessive Bieber fans, are the single guys and other assorted losers who poke fun at him and his alleged sexuality because they're insecure about themselves and know he would get, excuse my chauvinism/sexism, more pussy, than any other male on this planet.
Making fun of Justin Bieber is pointless and stupid.

... And a waste of time.
Although, I did see a picture recently in a magazine of him and that chick he's supposed to be going out with, and they're both like 5'2. I did think that was funny.

I feel bad for most child stars, Bieber included. I've seen interviews where he just wants to be playing video games but has to sit there for hours signing autographs. I don't really think he enjoys it all that much and I agree he'll be on the chang before not too long.
Now I can already predict the responses to this; 'there are children working 14 hours a day down mines, there are kids with no parents and nothing to eat... and you feel bad for this millionaire?!?!?!'. Obviously I'm not trying to compare the two and it's both stupid and offensive to even try to.
The problem with 'money don't make you happy' is that in many cases money does make you happy, it's hard to be happy when you can't afford the means of survival and a lot easier to be happy when you can.
Yet at the same time the assumption that money equals happiness remains on a straight fit line all the way isn't really true; is a billionaire that much happier than a millionaire? Lots of celebrities seem very depressed. I can't imagine Bieber lasting long.

As much as I dislike Justin Bieber's shallow music/personality/message we should probably recognize that there has never been an overnight sensation quite like him. In fact if he were a socialist, I guarantee revolution would happen at the hands of tween/teen girls (no sexism just that they tend to be his most hardcore fans). Also we should notice that every youtube music video has a comment about Justin Bieber.
For example the number of people who dislike a video are generally equated to the number of people who listen to Justin Bieber.
XX people press dislike button
Youtube video's highest rated comments==> XX people listen to Justin Biber
http://www.entertainmentwallpaper.com/images/desktops/movie/justin_bieber_never_say_never01.jpg
And now for the Justin Bieber joke we've all been waiting for.
Never say never to revolution. We need to believe just like Justin Bieber in our dreams.
Also I'm going to leave you to look at this image, for the sheer fun of it, and the fact that shrinking it is kind of hard. Please watch this movie in IMAX 3-D so you can feel the Bieber fever.

Insulting someone by contradicting their gender happens in both directions. It's not sexist.

It's not sexism as much as it's gender policing (which I don't see as the same thing as sexism).
I would have given a verbal warning (being the bigshot mod that I clearly am) but it was already flagged by dimentio so I won't do anything.

"I really don't believe in abortion," he told the magazine. "It's like killing a baby?"
When asked if it was acceptable in cases of rape, he told Rolling Stone: "Um. Well, I think that's really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that."

The internet is an amazing place. Thanks to its wondrous powers I have been able to expand my musical horizons to levels I'd never considered when I was 13 listening to the same five metal bands over and over again. Everything comes at a price and in this case it's that on just about every youtube video of a song that doesn't suck (and a number that do) there are about fifty comments about Justin Bieber or one of any number of insipid chart artists; people of whom I could have remained completely ignorant.
That said I don't generally try to deliberately expose myself to music I probably will neither understand nor enjoy so I've only heard one of his songs. I couldn't really figure out why he needs any special praise or condemnation.

He's just another 'teenage heart throb' in a long line of 'teenage heart throbs' who have made big huge piles of money for the recording industry, corporate record labels and concert promoters/venue owners. What's new about him? What's really all that different so as to distinguish him from his predecessors? It's the crassest example of music as product -- as a marketable commodity to make money for the investors backing it. Yes, all pop music is this way, but somehow Bieber personifies it here in this decade more so than anyone else.
Edit: then again, upon further reflection, he probably ties with Lady Gaga. But at least she generally has an intriguing visual artistry element to her work. Bieber is all product. He might as well wrap himself in cellophane, or box himself up in a clamshell package.

I bet "musicians" like Bieber are merely pawns of a conspiracy by Apple and similar companies to sell iPods - if you can choose the music you listen to instead of Bieber, that idiotic Friday "song" or any of the identical songs that make up the charts nowadays, then why wouldn't you want an iPod?

I'm not surprised to see "Bieber fever" inflicting RevLeft. After all, the media exposure is enormous. However, I can't say that I've seen many people drooling over him or his music here so the "fever" thing may be a bit unappropriate.
As far as my opinion is concerned: shitty, dull, uninteresting music and really horrible "personal" views. 'Nuff said. Now excuse me while I go listen to some Dying Fetus (pun intended :D).
