I'm going to visit a friend there for a week in March, when the carnival is on. Does anyone have any recommendations of things to do there or the nearish surrounding area?

venice is lovely i remember when i arrived at night only to wake up in the day to see it all - go on a waterbus [vaporetto] - you can get them all the time and they are the min way of travelling around .

the bridge of sighs is quite shocking.. however i enjoyed also a visit to the lido - nice gelati [ice cream] also if you are interested the graveyard at the lido has some famous people buried there..

walking around venice at night can be like a ghost town but maybe not during carnival- you will get some great food and wine there..depends what you like to do..it is very expensive....

My friend lives just on the outskirts of Venice in Mestre so accomodation will be free and he will know how to eat and drink a bit cheaper than I would have to otherwise. But yeah I reckon during carnival they will jack the prices of everything up.
Why do you say the Bridge of Sighs is shocking?
Thanks for the graveyard tip, I'm actually a big fan of going to them.

the bridge of sighs was a prison and some of the cells are VERY small and people were kept there for a very long time -there is graffiti on the walls - also in some of the churches you will see saints "relics" you know old preserved bodyparts lol

if you have time but you might not bologna has a communist past - for some coastal stuff the cinqueterra on the ligurian coast but takes 6 hours about by train and costs- if you are staying with a friend who lives there ,they will probably take you to places anyway?? - hope you have a great time!!!:):)
