Hi everyone I’m new. My name is Lisa and I am 27 years old and I have a couple of questions. First let me give you some background information on myself; my father side of the family is Cuban. My father and his sister came over with my grandmother around the time Fidel started to take over. My Great Aunt says that he took their land. My mother and father divorced when I was very young. I had very little contact with that side of the family for very along time. 1 year before I was going to marry my husband he asked me to contact my father. I never did and he passed away. But since then I have been in some contact with my family. I am very ashamed to say that I really do not know anything about the culture. I recently tried reading up on Che, because my husband said I should learn more about my heritage, but I am having a hard time understanding exactly what he did for the Spanish people. Can someone please forgive my ignorance and explain to me the good he did.
Thank you so much. P.S. If anyone knows any Menchero’s in Cuba let me know.
:D

Hi, welcome to Che-Lives.com forum. I'm glad you are investigating your past and trying to learn more about your roots...it truly will help you grow and feel more in tune with yourself. I'm Salvadoran, and I have a lot of Latino friends, and I'd just like to point out that you used the word "spanish" and that literally means someone from Spain...so some people might take that in offense b/c after all Spain conquered the America's. If you are not well informed, many people have different aspects of the history of Cuba...from what I understand Batista was the President before Castro came into power. He served the wealthy and the poor were extremely oppressed. Cuba was like Las Vegas for Americans in those days, a vacation spot to drink/gamble etc. So those who owned hotels and the like became extremely wealthy. Castro, after studying in the USA and I believe he became a lawyer, but he wanted to help the poor of Cuba. With the help of I believe 14 other men including Che Guevara (a doctor from Argentina who wanted to liberate the oppressed from the wealthy Imperialists) went into Cuba and overthrew the Batista regime, and basically thats how he came into power. The rich/middle class left the island because Castro took away all their wealth and came to the USA where they can easily find refuge by the US gov't. That's why the majority of Cuban's in the USA are republicans or conservatives.....
Well I hope this helps a little, and if anyone else has something to add or point out something let me know.

i can assure you taht your grandmother was either a big latifundiary (not sure if thats the correct english translation), in other words a big bourgoise with lots of propertys that they rent with very high taxes to the peasents...
i can assure you that the revolution did not took all lands from the people and put them under theyr "evil" hand...
in fact they gave the land to who works it..

Welcome Lisa.
latifundiary (not sure if thats the correct english translation),
Landlord there João.
After agrarian land reform all land is given to the peasants who reap the full benefit of their own work on their own land. Before that they had to pay wages to the landlords to make sure they were still being repressed, and there could be ratios of about 100 peasents plus per landlord.
