I want to get the hell out of my house but, I don't exactly have the cash to do it.
I work at the local McDonald's and I hate it so much I can barely get up the motivation to go to work which doesn't help my moving out fund.
How can I find super cheap apartments? All the online site don't show anything less than $900 a month which is about 500 too much....
I don't need much. Just decent room, decent shitter, and a decent small kitchen.
Any tips or tricks to living on the cheap? Any places that specifically list cheap places to live?:hammersickle::che::hammersickle:

Dude, crimethinc. You can squat abandoned houses, eat dumpster food, and hop trains. It's totally anarchist and stuff.

I'm serious though. You could find a squatted building. Just ask a dirty punk kid where one is.

This. Splitting bills is so much easier than trying to pay for everything yourself.

Very true. I've considered it. I'm mostly looking for a short term thing till I move into the Dorms in the fall. (provided I get into college :blushing:)
Being such a short term thing (like late may till sept.) it may not work to have a roommate. Not sure if leases are offered under 12months either.
Found an apartment 5mi from my hopeful college for $435! It's a studio, but it as on site laundry. I found that if I work 30 hours a week at minimum, minus rent and bus fare I'd have $480 left over for food and shit. $480 for an entire month? Methinks, I'd have to put in 40 hours or more to make it work. (Just did the math and 40 hours has $810 left over. still not much...)
Well, under obamacare I can stay on my parents insurance for the time being, which helps the money sitch. Public transport is unlimited after a $75 per month cost.
Bleh. Still gotta factor in food and fun lol.:hammersickle::che::hammersickle:

They are... You might just have to do a bit more hunting. My first lease when I moved to Cali was only 6 months. After that it went month to month. You won't find them under 6, though, unless you move into an efficiency and you probably don't wanna do that anyway.

It is an efficiency (aka studio) that I was looking at. Those extra walls for a bedroom add about 200-250 dollars to the rent...:hammersickle::che::hammersickle:

The former, sir and or madam.
My mom is voicing concerns over the cash I'd spend not going towards college. I kinda thought that's what student loans where for. It's not like I'd end up saving any anyway. It's move out and spend it on freedom or stay home all summer and blaze.
She doesn't seem to get the fact that the whole reason I want to move out in the first place is because of her.
Anyhow, any more cheap living tips would be welcomed!:hammersickle::che::hammersickle:

Do people even still hop trains anymore? I mean, trains nowadays are pretty sophisticated, and each train car is computerized, so the driver knows how much each car's loaded with, and whether it decreases or increases.
Anyway, I would advise that if you're looking to go out on your own, split the cost with someone else. Personally, I've got it split between five people, and there's only three rooms. And it's a house. Apartments are cheaper, so one or two friends, maybe even a third might cut it down enough to help you all save some money for other things.

In the US we still use outdated technology in that front. We still have plenty of train hoppers.

There are plenty of traveling people all around. I think it's cute that so many of you take every chance you get to posture into an imaginary position of superiority over them. They'd give better advice than you did- ffs.
If your main goal is school- I wouldn't move out. Get a second job during the summer if you're not taking summer courses- save up money to use on either school next summer or move in deposit.

Lol, I'm actually interested in traveling so I wasn't trying to be mean about it. I just thought about it because I've been lurking StP.

Living on your own and even with a roommate is expensive. Unless you have a great job it pretty much needs to be your main financial concern- which will effect school for sure.

This.
I lived on my own for a good 2 years, jumped from place to place. I had roommates, shits happens, you fight, then you get another spot. Luckily, I was always invited to go and move in with someone, so when two of the 3 spots I did rent out, I wasn't on the lease. A roommate is also a responsibility on its own. You need to make sure they are reliable, will pay their bills on time, clean up after themselves, and give you some privacy. Its not all sweet and dandy as you might think.

Just remember, all those student loans, your going to have to pay back eventually(which is why I am a bit against going to school, at least for any long period of time and spending shit loads of money on tuition). Best thing to do is suck it up, and save some money. I've been there and done that and it is honestly the most rational choice and can get better if you try and make things work.

Dude, seriously? You work at McDonald's, and want to find an apartment for 5 months.
Just suck it up til you get to college. If you hate your job so much then just quit and get a new one, you fucking live at home, are probably still under your rents' health insurance and don't have any student debt, what kind of bills do you have to worry about?
I swear to god, some of you people are just way out there.

Lived at my parents, squat, rented a room (when I was a student), squatted again, lived at my parents for a brief stint again.

Dude...
Of course you can't be motivated for work - You work at McDonalds for fucks sake! But I mean really, what work is motivating. I don't want a motivating job, fuck that, I want a decent job.
More importantly though, where are you living now? With your folks? With flat mates? Seriously, if I was working at Maccas I wouldn't even consider moving out for a second. Stay where you are and save some money. Money sense isn't just for the bosses you know.

Live with your parents when it's a suitable age (see: 17-21?) and not shameful (see: when all your friends are married and have kids and you're still asking mom for pizza bagels)
I didn't like living with my folks, but holy shit I'd do it in a heartbeat again. Growing up sucks dude, think about it. Especially if you're working at a bottom-line job like you are now. You'll accumulate debt fast, or starve faster.

Discovering yourself is important. Maybe put the school stuff on pause and travel for a couple years with the intention of moving back in with your relatives afterwards and finishing school.

Don't people rent rooms in the states? Like if someone has a spare bedroom do they not rent it out? That's usually the cheapest legal way to live and if you're lucky you'll meet some cool people.

Actually, yeah, and it's becoming more and more common for folks with adult children to do this. It's a result of folks struggling with mortgages and that. Anyway, don't do the efficiency thing (unless of course what you meant to say was studio, which is only different insofar as how the lease is structured). I've had friends that have stayed in them before, and none of them wanted to do anything but get the fuck out but couldn't... They're easy to get into but difficult to get out of from what I understand.

Oh yeah people still hop trains, a fairly vibrant and secretive subculture. If you want to be a trainrider go to the yard and wait for some kids to hop off. If they are cool, jump on with em. Follow your gut, you don't want to be stuck on a train with some creep! And dont go alone if you don't know what your doing.
No, the only think that is computerized like that is the brake line. Besides the cars are measured in multiple tons, a couple hundred pounds wouldn't matter anyways.
If anybody has any other questions, pm me, been riding the rails for a few years now.
