Maybe goes against the No boarders and it divides people by nations or is part of the capitalist machine. But I for one do.
I support England, far from a 'patriot' but I always what the team to win. Do not give them any money for shirts etc or fly flags out of my window at the world cup, but since I was a boy I have supported them and always will.
I was 10 when Euro 96 was on, I cried when we lost to Germany. :crying:
Playing Denmark away tonight. Shall be watching on the telly.

I cried when England lost to Germany too, I wanted to burn the whole place down.
But I cry more when "leftists" run around in national colors and refer to a nation as "we", because "it's just a game".

Very questionable leftists, certainly not the kind of leftists I'd want to have anything to do with (in a political sense).

LOL one can root for a team without tying it into nationalism.
What a silly and completely messed up person. I suggest you drop politics for a bit and live in the real world for some perspective.

My teams are: Argentina, Brazil, (<-- They're in the top 5 ranking so far. :D) Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico, Portugal, France, Spain (we're number one! We're number one! :D), Denmark, South Africa, Venezuela, Peru, Italy, Nigeria, and Greece.
You can say I'm a bit of a football freak. Kenya v. South Africa was cool from what I heard about the game.

I don't. Of course I will watch the World Cup, and other international tournaments, but I don't care that much about them compared to my club.
Basically today the product is second-rate and the World Cup can't compare to the Champions League in terms of quality.
Also I don't like the fact that just when a season is getting exciting they stop it for such a meaning less series of events as the current round of international friendlies.

Just like one can wear national colors, sing the national anthem and talk about how "we will beat them all" without tying it into nationalism, right?

I suggest you mind your own business. (also it's hardly like I'd been alone with my attitude here, but perhaps if you're a feel-good Marxist who doesn't ever reflect their own behavior and still waits for the second coming of the vanguard party that doesn't matter)

+10 points for mentioning "vanguard"
Unfortunately you missed out on the (obvious) 15 points available for dismissing everyone else as 'Leninist'. That would have set you up for a super triple combo with a x2 multiplier. Try harder next time!

I ususally pick a team that will piss off England fans that get really obsessed and nationalistic about it. When 'we' lost to Germany, the amount of disgusting, xenophobic nonsense I saw all over facebook just made me sick.
Last time, I 'supported' Algeria and North Korea - I was called a traitor and all sorts, and I was very proud.

If Belgium would win any meaningfull matches, I wouldn't miss out on an opportunity to have a great party with random strangers. Off course, I wouldn't be caught dead with a belgian flag in my hands.
But right now, during European or world championships, I just watch the matches and enjoy the party of the winning side.

I support the England football team, I probably go as far to say I am English, however I am far from a flag waving patriot. This country under the flag has done some sickening things to others in the past. By supporting 11 men from all backgrounds on a pitch does not mean I support the greater capitalist and royalist nation. It just happens to be where I was born and where I live. No different to someone being Greek, French or American.
However I agree with someone above, I support the England team and I would never offend someone else because they support their team or '''hate''' them because of this. As someone put, a lot of England fans bring up a load of offensive nonsense against the other team. It is after all a game. I even find deliberately setting out to wind this people up by supporting the opposition equally as childish and provoking. No reason to fight over countries, especially in a football game.
I also for what it is worth support the England cricket team as well. Do not like Rugby so would not have a clue with that.
So if that makes me less left wing than you, because I support a national team (long before I found my politcal self at 21, I'm 24 now) since I was boy. So be it, I can live with that.
And by crying when we lost to Germany, I mean in Euro 96 when I would of been 10. Not at last years world cup. :scared:

Do you run around with flags at football games though? If not, how exactly do you "support" your national team?

I don't run around with flags at games and I do not process a flag of any nation, leftist organisation or anything else for that matter. I never have flown the flag from my window (in England, during the big competitons many people fly the Cross of St George from their houses and car windows). I do not trash German cars because they beat England or break the windows of the Italian restrurants because they beat England (these have happened in the past as well).
By wanting to see them win is how I would class my support. I've been in the past to the odd England game, but the new Wembley goes against everything football should (a game which has its roots and formation firmly the working class) be about. I have not been since 2008.

England is a team full of knobs playing shit football and supported by fair weather fans. It's everything that's wrong with modern football, and that's before you even talk about nationalism.

I don't support it fanatically, but usually, we manage to qualify at least, and then the feeling grows during the tournament. Of course it always seems to lead to bitter disappointment by the end...

North American, I presume?
Yeah I support every other team in the world as well, especially Argentina and Brazil. When they play each other, I wish a "draw" is turned into "everyone's a winner!" so they can both win, and at the same time I consider Spain "we". They're #1 in the FIFA rankings, which is the most important thing in the world to me.

Frankly I don't give two cents about who one cheers for if they don't run around in national colors. The issue is that many "leftists" in Germany are quite eager to do this at every world cup (and I mean flags on cars, windows, face paint, etc.).

I support England at the World Cup and Euros, it's no different to supporting your local team. I don't fly the flag or any of that nonsense, but I do support England because I've lived here all my life and it's only football, not politics.

Yeah, I feel the same way about the US national team. I support them when they play, but I've never owned an American flag nor will I ever be caught dead in a US shirt, let alone with my face painted or any such nonsense. If it tells you anything, if the US and Ireland ever played one another, I'd probably be cheering for Ireland more. At the end of the day, though, I'm like Devrim insofar as I care far more about the club I support (Everton) than I do my national team.

I like the United States team, mainly because I know the league and have followed many of the players and like a lot of them.
Ditto for Mexico
I'm not a fan-boy but I like some of the Spanish players, good team to watch overall.
But this last WC I was really hoping to see the Kiwis win :D
