Somewhere between brave and, let's be honest, stupid. I mean, I can see how you could get to a point where you've dealt with so much shit that you don't care anymore and want to show these motherfuckers you're not scared of them, but that person appears to have accomplished little through their death. Like when the FLN stopped Algerian crowds from rioting and getting massacred after french citizens blew up houses in the muslim quater, they said go back home, do not allow yourself to be massacred, the FLN will avenge you.

Like the BPP were against the riots like we saw in America, they said that leaving the people open to be massacred, which they are whenever they try and fight the state unarmed, was wrong.

The point of a vanguard in a situation like this would be to conduct military operations and fight with small hit and run attacks, but also draws a line between the militants and protestors, so as to make sure the government would not, infront of the media, kill people who are not armed.

Violence for violences sake solves nothing, Violence needs to be organised and channeled to avoid massacres and actually topple the regime.

Although I don't know much about the example you specifically gave, the first thought that came to my mind when you mentioned the FLN having told the rioters to go home was 'scab'.

But the FLN did prevent the people getting massacred, the french army proceeded to wipe them out, this in turn brought the whole population to rise up violently and win their independence, its not the same as say the volunteerism in Ireland.
