Definitely one of the single best acted movies I've ever seen from the entire cast. Hillary Swank and Chloe Sevigny (justifiably) have received a lot of credit for their roles, but Brendan Sexton and Peter Sarsgaard were fucking awesome too. The fact that Sexton played such a vicious and maniacally triumphant role in the rape scene and broke down in tears immediately after filming it shows what a great acting job he did. The directing and cinematography was also amazing. I watched it last a few months ago and am about to watch it again tonight, so I'll probably have more to say on it after that. Any of you like it?

I disliked it, which is odd because it's exactly the sort of thing one would expect me to like, but there you are.

I thought it was an amazing film, the brutality is shocking. Cried almost from beginning to end.

You know Hilary Swank (who played Brandon amazingly!) when accepting the Academy Award referred to Brandon using the pronoun 'his' and Brandons family complained suggesting Brandons trans identity was invalid and Hilary Swank apologised! :/

I remember reading a review of the film in which the reviewer had somehow come to the conclusion that Hilary Swank's character was a self-identified female who presented as a male as some sort of... ironic, postmodern gesture. Gave me a good laugh.

I got it downloaded a month or more ago, but haven't watched it yet. . .

Honestly I think the whole genre of victimization film is a voyeuristic and objectifying way of getting cathartic kicks. I am sick of a type of deference being paid to this genre of film.

You have got to be kidding me.

So you're saying stories where a person may be victimized by another are made and viewed for the purpose of getting off to someone else's pain? That's fucking ridiculous. Never mind the fact that these films confront issues facing millions every day, provoke discussion and thought on these issues, and give us a glimpse into the fictionalized lives of other human beings so as to learn constructive things about ourselves.

Thelma and Louise is bad because it depicts a sexual assault? A Clockwork Orange is bad because it depicts murder and rape? What about Dolores Claiborne? Dolores is a victim of spousal abuse and her daughter a victim of incestual molestation.

To brand an entire (huge) fraction of films (it's not even a genre) as being porno for people who want to commit horrible acts through the proxy of movie characters merely because those films depict and shed light on horrible things has to be, in all honesty, one of the stupidest things I have heard in an incredibly long time.

Edit: I just finished watching Philadelphia, is that voyeuristic too? I mean, if Andy Beckett's not a victim, I don't know who is

Yeah, I was surprised she apologized.

I think John is one of the best characters I've ever seen. Even when I saw the movie for the second time and knew exactly how it ended I still couldn't help but like John at certain points in the movie, particularly in the beginning. There were times where I was actually tricked into thinking he'd be a cool guy to hang out with. Just shows how awesome the writing and Sarsgaard's acting were.

Maybe they should dumb it down to not offend the sensibilities of people who are afraid of the issues that are carefully hidden from mainstream society?
