Tom Waits is mostly unique. He uses and combines several element to make his own sound.

His early work was definately (nightclub) jazz but he later evolved towards eclectical jazz-rock with soul elements.

He is awesome though.

not a fan- just find his music very derivative - and he was born in California :)
