It's surprising how sympathetic and even outraged at the cops that news guy was.
I was talking to a friend recently, we thought it was interesting that even if most people have some delusional political ideas, people have a very distrustful attitude towards cops. They may rely on them, but most people don't like them. So it's pretty much "us" (the majority of even-headed people) against "them" (the cops and the ultra-reactionary cop worshiping segment of society).
At least one progressive attitude seems to prevail, if only on an individual basis that isn't commonly expressed in public.

On one hand, a society does need police.
On the other hand, I don't want racist violent pricks doing the job, and they need to be accountable to the community they are meant to protect.
"them" (the cops and the ultra-reactionary cop worshiping segment of society).
What's amazing is that there are so many who still seem to disregard the legitimate claims that various groups have towards officers without any reason. They resort to an ad hominem attack ... "you don't like cops beating up innocent black men, wow are you some kind of *cop killer*?" By far the worst excuse; "well, they have a hard job and need to make split decisions." We've had enough Oscar Grants thanks to underqualified thugs making too many "split decisions"

Their protection of people is for the sake of protecting class interesting. If the police have to choose between protecting the weak and most vunerable v. property, they will choose property. For black people, the police have been nothing more then a local branch of the army patrolling the streets.

I would strongly disagree with you, especially on the size of the "ultra-reactionary cop worshiping segment of society." While people tend to rage about vile cop attacks like these, they would argue that its an individual cop that's doing this. Most people tend to either like the cops, or think that they're doing the best job that they can. Most people think like Bill O'Reilly on the cop subject, if protestors are "breaking property" then the cops have the right to beat the shit out of them. They also defend cops in every case, saying that they have a hard job, or that it is their job to do what they're doing. Even in some cases of violence the people defend the police aggressors, and when they don't defend them they forget about them. Also people have this attitude that if you criticize the police, you should have to somehow switch places with them, and see if their job was easy/ if you criticize them you must be a criminal.
Most "even headed" people are on the side of the cops. And when they aren't, it usually isn't because they think that the system is unfair, its merely because in that instance the system is being unfair to them. People still don't have the conscience to take care of one another against police brutality.
