yea lets share all our love for creative things

i like writing. i mean it seems from forum posts that i am illiterate but i am actually p. good at writing its just that ive adopted this tweaker internet voice since i was like 14 so it just stuck. i like writing poetry and short fiction but my forte is definitely short fiction. but i think i am pretty good at it i mean ive been reading and writing since i was maybe like ten. ive sold one short story i am trying to sell another one. its a nice thing to write but lamentably its not one of those things that gets you laid more or makes you cooler its actually a very solitary art. it seems sometimes i am hella anti intellectual but actually i have a pretty good grasp of literature in general and i have p. strong opinions about it on what is good or bad.

I used to be fairly good at drawing. All of my schoolwork used to be covered with drawings, and I actually got a professional artist in New York to give me lessons (two of my family members are painters). Unfortunately I kind of let that talent go by the wayside.

I used to write a lot but I don't do it so much anymore. I also like drawing and I am alright at drawing pictures of people in the sense that my pictures look like who they're meant to look like.

Yeah, I write poetry and such. Generally love poems and poems about nature, although I also have a few darker poems about apocalypses and strange inhuman forces and whatnot. I've also written a novel (about 83,000 words), although I'm not going to try publishing it because I think it's a bit too flawed, largely because it often goes for manipulation rather than expression; that is, it tries to make the reader feel a certain way rather than simply expressing emotion. I feel that this is an important difference, and one which I've put more significance on since writing that work. While it didn't feature blatant sentimentalism generally (guys, the puppy died! isn't that sad? oh, also look at this prolonged death scene, it even has swelling music and everything! (the worst of this is generally in political novels, I find)), I still don't like it much. As such, I'm working on another novel, so we'll have to see how that goes. Still, it was useful practice, so there's that; also, I do like the general concept a fair bit, so I may rewrite it someday. Right now I'm not prepared to put in the effort, though.

My poetry is probably most influenced by Clark Ashton Smith, although there's also tinges of Shakespeare and Shelley (Shelley especially in nature poetry.) My prose is probably most inspired by Lord Dunsany, although I have developed away from simply aping his style, and also generally focus more on a first person style somewhat influenced by Bernhardt rather than Dunsany's usual whimsical third-person narrative. While I do have a couple of poems up on my blog here, these aren't particularly serious, being more satirical, and don't have much resemblance to my other works. I also write analyses of literature, which is something which I've always found fairly comfortable for some reason; this had really helped in school English essays and exams, although I still disliked high school English a fair bit, which had to do with the general trend of the thing. I tend to have strong opinions on literature in terms of quality, but also on matters of interpretation, especially in works such as 'Hamlet' where I tend to think that just about every analyst is full of shit, and this made studying it rather painful.

I'm really pretty dismal at drawing, painting and such, to be honest. It's a form of art which I haven't explored nearly enough. I do like Watteau, though, and some Romanticist works are quite great; still, I'll have to do a lot more investigation to get a particularly good taste for the thing. Perhaps I'll never actually pick up the technical skills, but I may as well learn to appreciate it properly at least. When it comes to music, I do play guitar, although I have some way to improve as yet. I listen to a lot of classical stuff like Bach (well, especially Bach. I'm quite fond of Glenn Gould's renditions of Bach, as well) and Stravinsky, as well as music such as Ligeti and Xenakis; I also listen to progressive rock and metal, bands from The Mahavishnu Orchestra, King Crimson and Guapo to Psychotic Waltz (primarily 'A Social Grace'), Holocaust (from 'The Sound of Souls' onwards), and Secrecy. There's also techno-thrash bands such as Mekong Delta (who remind me a fair bit of Stravinsky), Watchtower and Sider. As such, I really set myself higher standards when it comes to guitar than is perhaps healthy. Still, I generally pay more attention to writing than music.

its a nice thing to write but lamentably its not one of those things that gets you laid more or makes you cooler its actually a very solitary art."The more a man cultivates the arts, the less randy he becomes [...] Only the brute is good at coupling, and copulation is the lyricism of the masses. To copulate is to enter into another -- and the artist never emerges from himself"

- Baudelaire.

Of course, I'm asexual, so I have something of a headstart there.

I have tried to write poetry, or stylistic prose in a diary-like fashion, but I am not at all confident with it. An acquaintance of mine (don't wanna call her a friend) writes poetry in her spare time. Some is very pretentious, but some is OK; the point is, I wish I had the confidence to perform it like she does. She is a 70s-style feminist so is quite fiery. For me, writing in general is a deeply personal thing, so to try and recite anything I've written myself for any amount of other people would be like getting naked and doing a dance. I prefer to write in sort of reflective way, just to simply comment and examine, as opposed to taking a definite stance issue x in the hope of making the reader take sides. Kind of like how Chekhov writes.

I also love playing (esp. improvising) music. I play drums, and generally have an affinity for rhythm. I try to vary my listening habits. This is pretty easy, but to actually consciously apply these features or details that I hear is difficult. I have been listening to a lot of jazz recently (Jimmy Cobb, Bill Cobham etc.), but applying this to my own playing is hard. It is a totally different language. I also take a big influence from Bernard Purdie, who is a complete legend (the 'most recorded drummer in the world'). He is also a funny guy.

I'm a musician. I play a bunch of instruments and I sing. I write music, though I place an emphasis on improv (composition and lyrics). I write stories and all that fun stuff. I've been developing some screenplays. I try to make original and interesting outfits. I wanna direct my own movie. I wanna get a camera to start doing photography. I've started painting and sculpting.

Edit: make-up also

I forgot to mention, I also like sewing but I don't really have a lot of time to do it. My parents gave me a sewing machine for Christmas though, so hopefully I'll be able to get back into it. :)

The amount of creative stuff I do varies greatly with my mood. If I'm feeling low I don't tend to have any motivation to do anything. I only tend to do stuff when I'm feeling fairly good, although if I can force myself to write or draw when I'm feeling down or angry, it does actually help. I should really do it more often.

I would say I write a lot, but that would be a lie. I'm not prolific at all. I have the terrible habit of never writing down my ideas. And those I do, I almost never finish. So my portfolio of complete work is rather small, with the biggest piece being a seventeen page short story. The rest are mostly poems.

Pretty sad considering this is what I hope to make a living off of. :(

edit: I used to be a fairly decent at drawing (Even got a degree from the art instructions school), but i haven't drawn anything in a long time.

My "Stories" folder on my computer mostly consists of opening chapters. I seem to lose motivation to finish stuff and then forget where I was going with it.

I write poetry and short stories. I journal a lot and I engage in scrap booking adventures that are cool and not boring. I used to paint and draw but I don't anymore because it becomes frustrating and most of the time it leaves me in an extremely bad mood.

Right now I've found that a lot of non-creative writing, such as political writing, is way too distracting for me to also engage in while trying to edit poetry collections for submission.

I wrote a short play once, a few short stories. Nothing I'm proud of or anything.

I was bored at work today, so I started a 10-minute play on global warming but I need to figure out more about how it's going to go. It's sort of an absurdist piece, in that it's entirely self-aware. I've been thinking I'd like to do some real Brechtian-type plays.
