Pretty sure he was being facetious, since, you know, football is the most popular sport in the US, and he loves to ruffle America-loving patriots' feathers, so he does so here with talk about how their #1 sport is socialist.

But then again, Bill Maher has not been the most sympathetic or knowledgeable proponent of socialism, so who knows.

I agree with this bit... If you really analyze its dynamics, the NFL is really more of a cartel than anything else.
