to assist them in gaining an 'understanding' of the 'failure' of the Soviet economy.

Ahh yes the failure of the quota economy, it in no way compares to the capitalist economy. It is not only biased, but just plain false. To make a game to show how well imperial-capitalism works you only need to tell the children this. Ok half the class will not get to go home, and they'll have to cut out cars for fourteen hours. They'll be given $2 and 2-3 children to feed each. 49% of the class will have progressively better wages, and only the top one percent will have all the candy. Have fun kids :D.

When I was growing up (in a Texas school) we had some idiotic anti-Communist nonsense, but not an activity to demonstrate it. It was interesting- we did the opposite- make an example of an idiotic McCarthyeque Red-baiting rant.
That being said it was on the whole anti-Communist. Consider even with stuff like that in the curriculum you still get angry parents claiming the classroom is too "liberal" and they need to take back the classroom. This is coming off a curriculum which was mostly originated during the Bush years in Austin. It culminated in a nasty experience last year (http://www.revleft.com/vb/religious-conservatives-trying-t129110/index.html?t=129110).

Reminds me of when I was in High School and on a trip to Russia. Me and some blokes and gals from my class partook in Russian classes, namely music and arts. In arts, we had to produce a specific number of paper clowns.
The teacher scratched her head when one of us started to produce legs, others produced the torso and others the heads.

Perfectly stated. Now that's a educational exercise I'd like to see in a classroom somewhere! An exercise which will assist children in better understanding the only system that 'works.'
