I'm taking a political science course this semester (requirement). My biased professor was talking about old monarchies and dictatorships. He stated (without anything to support his agrument) that Spain was one of the only true fascist nations left. I was wondering how that is true or if it is true at all? Thank you brothers and sisters.

Fascist? Nah. They're one of the more rightist governments in Europe, but they don't even compare to the U$A.
The left has a tendency to throw around the word "fascist" at people or states that don't deserve it. Make no mistake, I fully support fighting capitalism on all fronts, but not everything non-communistic is "fascist."

he's obviously not a communist, if he was, he wouldn't choose Spain to call fascist. All capitalist nations, I think, are fascist since they all work against the emancipation of the working class and in favor of the plutarchal ways of capitalism. Capitalism, which concentrates all the power in the hands a few who wield this power to oppress the people, is very authoritarian. And that is what fascism is, no? Extreme authoritarianism and against proletarian domination?

I am no authority on Spain, but their highest leader Aznar is considered prime minister. Isn't Spain a parliamentary bourgeios democracy? Spain was one of the last fascist regimes in Europe, though, as Franco ruled into the 1970s, right?

Yes, spain was fascist until 1975 when Franco died. It was horrible when franco ruled, couldnt even talk badly about him. As my dad says, the only people who trusted and believed in franco were those who believed you could live well, that things would get better.
As for spain being fascist now- no fucking way. I can tell you this because i have seen it first hand- i live in the us, but am from spain and go there every year. Yes they have done some horrible things in the past and sometimes still do (the way ETA is handled-pais vasco & outlawing a party because of their association with ETA- as well as sending soldiers to Iraq). But let me tell you two things- we are a country that has recognized many of our past mistakes (mostly the civilians) and have changed a lot, and i mean alot. Second, yes the government sucks, but the people do not. The people of spain are the most thoughtful (when it comes to humanity and other things) and intelligent people and from what i have seen- most are also leftists. Most are against Aznar and what he stands for- much of spain considers him to be another Franco and want him gone. I personally cant stand the man either- i want him gone just as much as i want bush gone. He hasnt got a clue whats good for the people of spain or anywhere else.
And hell ya its definitely better than the us- can study mostly free (you just got to pay for books), pretty much everyone has health care, etc. Plus the attitude of the spanish people is so much better- more relaxed, know how to enjoy life, arent so concerned with material, etc.

SenoraChe,
You say that Aznar is not very popular? Was he re-elected recently?

The Nazis didn't supported the republic, they supported Franco and the facists.
And as for the original subject, Spain was a facist country for many years, but now it isn't.

Youre right MIN- he was re-elected in 2000 after promising to root out corruption and all that wonderful stuff. Unfortunately like other people around the world, the spaniards believed this and there he is again. However, you dont have to be popular to be in office- look at Bush.
I should have clarified it though- now more than ever he is hated. The prestige and the war with iraq really pushed the spaniards over the edge. He proved right there that he doesnt know what the people want and what is good for the people.
Hopefully, after March Spain will get someone who truely does care because there is a lot of work that needs to be done.

They're not fascist, the government has been pulling down the old statues of Franco, and left-wing parties and youth groups are quite active there, and that's the extent of my knowledge.

SenoraChe,
I was under the impression that Aznar had been reelected this year or last. I remember seeing a thread here on che-lives about it. Maybe it was another European prime minister...
