Truth to say, I've never heard of any Maoist groups that didn't have a high opinion of Stalin...though that doesn't mean "uncritical".

I vaguely remember a Maoist group that "admitted" a "progressive" role for Trotsky 1917-1923...but after that, thought Stalin was right.

In particular, Maoists definitely follow Stalin's theory of "socialism in one country"...that is, a "socialist" society can exist completely independent of the rest of the world even in a small country...and "should" do so. Every country "should" produce within its own borders whatever it needs after the "socialist" revolution.

This is probably a manifestation of the bourgeois nationalism inherent in the kinds of situations where Maoism is both popular and viable...semi-colonial, semi-feudal countries trying to make the transition to modern capitalism.

In the western countries, of course, all of the varieties of Leninist groups have become sects...so the question of which icons they pray to is essentially irrelevant.

Maoists always follow the opinion of Mao. Mao had a good opinion of Stalin. There is some criticism of Stalin from Maoists as redstar2000 said, but very little.

You can't be a Maoist without being a Stalinist, or at least your are fooling yourself if you are since Mao was in league with the Soviet Union prior to 1953. He greatly criticised Khrushchev once he came to power.

Well, he seems to be the authority on Maoism, and considering the nature of the two ideologies, I can see why Maoists would support Joe.

Following the revolution in 1949 the Chinese grafted the Soviet beaurocracy onto the own political system. They were essentially Bolsheviks in China. The majority of the Chinese communists and certainly the leadership called themselves Bolsheviks (Bolsheviks in a Stalin sense, which to Stalinists is of course in the Lenin sense of the word also).

Indeed, the name of the Chinese revolutionaries geurrilla force was named after the Soviets own Red Army. In addition the areas that the Red Army managed to gain control of in China had names such as 'central Soviet area...'

Stalin and the CPSU heavily influenced the Chinese revolution, not just with aid but with the strategic plans. The CPSU even told the Chinese to fight alongside the KMT against the Japanese so that they would be successful in the revolution only having to fight the single force of the KMT, the Chinese of course accepted this plan.

Mao and Stalin had a number of meetings. They became largely equals which allowed a difference of opinion. Following the revolution China received more economic aid from the Soviets, however Stalin died 4 short years after the revolution. Once Stalin died Mao did criticise some of Stalin's strategic plans in the revolutionary period. However remained ideologically very similar to Stalin.

Mao then continued to massively criticise Khrushchev and denounce him as a revisionist. Unfortunately China received the same fate as the Soviet Union.

Maoists are Stalinists, however they favour Mao over Stalin.
