Progressive Labor Action Front denounces Fayyad economic policy and calls for workers' rights

Click here for French translation - The Progressive Labor Action Front denounced the weekly address on January 19, 2011 of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, which claimed that there are economic improvements for Palestinians due to the work of the Palestinian Authority. On the contrary, said the PLAF, rates of unemployment and poverty remain extremely high - over 30% - in both the West Bank and Gaza, accompanied by a continuous rise in the cost of living and high prices, which have affected staples and needs of life for Palestinians, that has been accompanied by a general decline in the wages and salaries for the vast majority of workers in the public and private sectors, particularly when adjusted for inflation.

The Front noted that the improvements claimed by Fayyad do not represent more than one-third of the total Palestinian workforce, knowing that the vast majority suffer from a quality of living that includes difficulty obtaining staples and living below the poverty line, with many in extreme poverty.

The Labor Action Front said that the fight against poverty and unemployment requires a minimum wage according to international norms and standards, that is linked to the cost of living and constantly adjusted in order to ensure it is compliant, and the adoption of the Social Security Law to provide unemployment insurance, as well as much greater regulation of the use of Palestinian labor.

The Front also urged all workers' organizations and trade unions to act to defend workers' rights through all means, including public protests and popular actions, and not to remain within closed conference halls with PA officials. It emphasized that the voice of workers must be heard in order to enhance Palestinian steadfastness, and in face of racism, exploitation, fascism and Zionism practicing all forms of oppression against our people.
