Not to be confused with the shitty filtered version. These used to be the best unfiltereds, then Pall Mall ceased to exist, THEN they were brought back as an economy brand in the early 2000's, and this year I think they brought these original good ones back. I always prefer unfiltered (although lucky strikes suck, Chesterfields are good in a pinch), and I knew that Kurt Vonnegut smoked these, and I thought that if they were good enough for him they were good enough for me.

THEY FUCKING WERE.

How much is 6.50 euros when its converted to dollars? $6.50 a pack is wayyy to much :\ I've cut down my habit, but when I was smoking fairly regularly, lights did the job. If I was on a budget these babies always came in handy.

(not that I smoke regularly enough that it's atrociously expensive) Cigarettes are unreasonably expensive over here. I spend just over £6 for 25g of tobacco plus about £1.30 on papers and filters (although filter and paper replenishment happens at a different rate so the tobacco is the more important price.)

It was B&H or, when times were harder, Mayfair, Lambert and Butler, Sovereign or Golden Virginia.

I quit a few years back, just before the smoking ban, deciding i would rather give up my favourite hobby than stand outside a pub in the freezing cold because of the anti-smoking arseholes in government. If you had told someone just 20 years ago that one day you could potentially be arrested for having a cigarette with a pint in a pub, they would have thought you were being melodramatic. I feel really sorry for smokers nowadays.

Haha, I think smokers have far more worries then having a pint and cig in the pub. Smoking supports stunting muscle growth, causes lung cancer and emphysema, turns teeth yellow and ages your skin faster then even skin damage from the sun, raises heart disease 2-4 times, stroke 2-4 times more likely, and just a shit load other things.

Either way, Starbucks now has a ban on smoking within 14 feet of any location. Its just a hassle.

Every smoker knows smoking isn't good for their health. But when did good health become an end in itself?

Also, if 1 in 3 smokers will die as a result of smoking, it's statistical fact that the majority of smokers will die from causes unrelated to smoking. One fact you'll never read on fag packets...

As for the topic at hand, I both smoke and use snus, a traditional swedish nicotine product that is even more addictive than smoking. I always smoke the same brand, a swedish one called the yellow Blend, except when I'm abroad and can't get it, obviously. Then any nicotinewise middle-strong brand will do.

The Snus brands I use vary a lot, when I get tired of one flavor I change to another.

Let's see: years back smoked Luckies because I needed all the luck I could get. Then Marlboro Red because they showed up in rations.

Then this guy I knew turned me on to John Player Specials which were to me the best tasting thing I had ever smoked. Made several trips from Chicago across the border to Windsor, Ontario just to load up on as many cartons as I could.

Then I quit. Because I knew it would kill me. Still think about having one now and then. Addict's romance.

Some people need to drink; some gamble; some can't get enough Cheetoes. Me, if I thought it wouldn't kill me, I'd smoke until my eyeballs fell out.

Don't even know if John Player Specials, or the company, even exists anymore.

I know this sounds counter-sensical but it worked for me when quitting-- [no sugar] lukewarm black coffee. Sip it throughout the day. Caffeine blocks the uptake of nicotine, and supposedly reduces the craving. And the bitter taste was a decent diversion from the desire for the taste of tobacco.

Like I said, counter-sensical, but it worked for me.

That can't be serious. Why would making the warning bigger have any impact? Do they think that people can't see it?

The theory being, you don't look quite as cool and sophisticated pulling out a pack of cigarets with the picture of a tumor on it and 30 pt type that says, essentially:

"Look at me, I'm a fucking idiot, willing to inflict a slow and painful death on myself for the greater glory, and profits, of tobacco companies."

I think the same warnings should be placed over every military recruiting office.

John Players certainly exists, it's one of the most popular brands in Quebec. "Special" generally refers to "light" because advertising laws have made it illegal for cigarette companies to advertise brands as "light" because they're just as shitty for you as "regular" varieties.

That's utterly fucking stupid. If a smoker were really concerned about their "image", all they would have to do is cover it up with some black sticky tape, and job done.

Or even better, they could just buy a cigarette case. They look far cooler than any fag packet and don't come with those ugly warnings:

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/1979/cigarettecase1743451825.jpg

And I thought that "light" was a reference to the flavour of a cigarette, not it's effect on health. But then again I'm just a prole and that, according to the ruling classes and other misguided souls, makes me a fucking stupid lemming who needs to be constantly patronised and insulted for my own good, apparently.

This. I was always on Camel Filters or Winstons (whichever was cheaper) until recently, when I tried these and realized there was actually more value in a $6 pack of these than in a $4 pack of Camels.

It's just a whole lot of cigarette. Bonus is that I feel a lot better physically (in terms of the color of whatever it is I'm hacking up every morning) when I smoke Spirits.

Last thing - anyone who smokes the Turkish varieties, try running a lighter up and down the white part like you're sealing a blunt for, say, 20 seconds or so. Once you realize what's going on, you're not going to want to smoke them any more.

That may be true, but most "light" varieties just have more tiny holes in the filter, "extra-light" has even more.

i think its the other way around
light cigs have less porous filters meaning the smoke is filtered more
you have to suck harder to get more smoke inet

Just out of curiosity, are you all fuckin' nuts? That is really expensive.

Trust, at the rate prices are rolling out, its a bargain. Some clubs i've been to down here in so cal will even prohibit you from taking in sealed packs of cigarettes(which I can find for 4.50) inside the venue, and then turn around and sell packs for ten bucks at the bar. Its ridiculous how they capitalize and discriminate against "smokers."

Why what happens? (I haven't bought cigs in over two months so I don't have any to try it on right now.)

That can't be serious. Why would making the warning bigger have any impact? Do they think that people can't see it?

They seem to take themselves seriously, and honestly the new warnings are just going to become the new brands. "Gimme the one with the hot chick on it smoking a cig warning" instead of "Gimme brand X"

Military recruiting centres would be hilarious with warnings. "Warning: Being in the infantry may result in becoming a POW who is tortured.... but it's better than boot camp"

In Utah, it was 12 bucks with taxes for a pack of Marlboro Reds. Ridiculous.
In Serbia, however, the brand I smoke is a little less than 1 dollar, and Marlboro Reds cost something like $1.5.
Poverty and social vents kick ass.
