What the fuck kind-of pizza place doesn't accept credit in this day and age. I got a debit card and a desire for pizza. You got pizza. What's the problem?

Your asking if I mean they use their debit in the us? Yeah, everyone and their mom does over here. I don't cause I don't have a bank account.

Don't use a credit card or debit card, either. But not because I don't have a bank account.

I use credit only for high priced things. Don't bother with debit cards since they're a waste of my time and it's easier to just have the cash in wallet. Also, it's less likely someone to get away with my credit card and charge a shit load without going through the proper channels and someone calling me to ask what's up with my sudden radical spending spree. Debit cards, they don't work like that until you get the bill.

I use credit and debit, but I'm real good at watching my balance. I think most everyone in the US has cards now. I prefer using cash though.

we do use cards, just not creditcards, we call it pin, what do you call it? ATM cards? you can use them everywhere here. and yes also almost everywhere to pay your pizza

In Japan credit card use is pretty rare. People walk around with huge sums of cash because very few places accept them.

But you can get two small pieces of friend chicken and 13 french fries at KFC in Tokyo for 750¥ (~ $9 USD).

Oh yeah, that's what we use a lot too. We often call them debit cards, it takes the money directly out of your account instead of charging it to a credit account?

I've never actually had a credit card and I'm going to try not to. Seems a lot of folks get sucked into serious debt that way.

Yeah, me too. I don't think I could trust myself with a credit card.

Recently I've been ordering food online quite a lot, which allows card payments (and I don't have to leave the house, or even my desk, which is always a plus).

I had several credit cards. I got them as soon as I was old enough. I maxed out the cards and never paid them. After seven years the debt disappeared.

DYI reparations.

Same. I have some change in my car for trolls, but otherwise I never have cash. Hell, even the vending machines at my college have a place to swipe your card now.

Nothing Human Is Alien

Simple.

1. Get a credit card.

2. Use it.

3. Don't make any payments for 7 years.

4. Credit card debt is forgiven.

Can they not get bailiffs or whatever to settle the debt?

Yea this is kind of what I was wondering.

If it's as easy as that why isn't everyone doing it I guess is what I'm asking. There's gotta be a catch somewhere.

They will send bailiffs round to come and get your shit if they can find you, my mate ran up about £20,000 worth of debt and just went bankrupt. Going bankrupt is actually ok except it destroys your credit rating and the bank won't let you have a (proper) debit card let alone a credit card. For a while my mate had to use my card to buy shit online and give me the money back.

No they won't. Not in the United States. There is no debtor's prison.

You will get letters and phone calls from collection agencies for a few years. You'll have a poor credit score. That's about the most of it.

A lot of people are amazed when they hear this, but it's the truth.

They can come get big things like houses and cars bought on loans, but they won't come take things bought on credit cards.

And I'm not talking about going bankrupt; just not paying.

This doesn't apply to student loans.

Fear and ignorance, mostly. People think something terrible will happen to them. It's a part of what's required to keep things like credit systems and the like functioning. That's why collection agencies promote it by telling you they're going to do this and that.

The absolute worst thing that can come from credit card debt (outside of a bad credit report) is a civil case. Collectors can sue you in civil court. If they win, they can put a lien against you (which could in some cases lead to a garnishment of wage or a seizure of property). This is really rare, and they have to take you to court and win first. And you have to have some property to seize.

If you rent an apartment, don't own a house, have a shitty job, and take out credit cards for a few thousand dollars, max them out and never pay, nothing like that will happen. You'll get letters for a few years then the debt will dissolve.

Of course I'm not recommending that anyone do it. I'm just pointing out the facts.

Just found this with a quick google search to back up what I'm saying:

"After 7 seven years (in most cases), a negative mark and the related collections will disappear from your credit report. If the debt has gone unpaid for 7 years, then it can no longer legally remain on your credit report." - http://www.creditinfocenter.com/debt/settle_debts.shtml

I tend to pay for stuff in cash. So does everyone else I know. In fact, I'm pretty fucking flabbergasted to find, upon reading this thread, that there are people who use cards for normal, everyday things. WTF, people.

It can be easier, and if I've forgotten to withdraw cash it means I don't have to walk to a cash point to get some out. It's bad for budgeting though because it's harder to keep track of what I'm spending.

Debit cards, yeah. Nowadays, it's become so common that nobody gives a fuck any more if you want to use your card to buy a €0.50 cup of coffee at the university cafeteria or whatever. A while ago, there were commercials that said, "It's okay to use your debit card for small transactions" (don't ask; it rhymes in Dutch). Was it ever any different? I honestly don't remember.

On the other hand, there is a restaurant where you can get delicious and cheap Indian food in my city which only accepts cash, and there aren't any cash machines in the area. Weird.

Also, does anyone from Holland ever use one of these babies?

I've never used and and I've never, ever seen anyone at the supermarket ask, "Can I chip that?" I wonder how prevalent it is.

think that the only ppl who use it are ppl who need to park their car often in different citys or ppl whose work cafeteria uses it.
it never took of and its already set to dissapear with the next gen debitcards who will be completly chipbased instead of magnetstrip anyway.

I prefer to use the self-service checkouts at supermarkets, and usually use my debit card to pay for stuff when using such checkouts. I only really use cash at pubs or when I'm buying something from a smaller shop or pizzeria.

There was a time, commonly known as the 1980s, where it wasn't OK to use cards for small purchases. Mostly that had to do with the fact that most places didn't have electronic terminals for processing card purchases. They'd have to bust out ye olde carbon imprinter 'n' shit to sell stuff too you, making the process actually take longer than cheque writing. The places that did have electronic card readers had them attached to 2400 or 4800 bps dial-up fax modems so it took fucking forever as well...

http://www.1stopretroshop.com/photos/n226452.jpg

^Aforementioned ye olde credit card imprinter. It used carbon copies to imprint an image of the credit card on paper by inserting the card underneath one of the sheets pictured at the bottom and sliding that big handle back and forth. The clerk would then have to fill out a bunch of crap in the boxes on the right hand side of the page before you could even sign... Pain in the ass.
