View Full Version : Marxist Career Hypocrisy

I am thinking about becoming a security guard for a career. I realize that the training requirements are minimal, and this is one of the main reasons I am considering this career.
My question is this: Since the job of a security guard is to protect bourgeois property, is it hypocritical for a Marxist to become one?
I realize that for a Marxist to work in any Capitalist career is, to some extent, hypocritical, since our work benefits the Capitalist class.
Please inform me of any other careers that you would consider hypocritical for a Marxist. (I am not talking about obviously hypocritical careers like drug smuggling or prostitution.)
Thanks

Is it not then hypocritical for a proletarian to produce capital? We do what we need to survive, we are forced to. That is the nature of exploitation. The only thing that would be hypocritical would be if a leftist ran a business and accumulated capital created by wage laborers.

Prostitution and Drug Smuggling are not hypocritical.
Arresting, Fining, and Caging the working class are hypocritical things to do as a supposed supporter of the working class.

When a worker produces capital, they are doing something good and useful that is subverted by the coercive apparatus of the capitalist class.
When someone becomes a security guard, they are the coercive apparatus of the capitalist class.

Exactly. The capitalists could not exist as a class but for their paid enforcers. Enforcement is what creates property and enables exploitation - there is no private property without the muscle and guns of those who take it from the producers to give to the exploiters.

u may be "part of the aparatus" and blahblahblah, but whether u become a security guard or not will have absolutly ZERO impact on the workers movemenet or anything, so do it if u want. If a group of angry proletarians ever tried to occupy what ur guarding, let them have it tho.

I was almost a security guard at a hospital. I think there is a bit of a line between being a security guard at you know, a local shopping mall and being a security guard at the pentagon.

Just do the job poorly until you get fired.
Let yr friends in on the news: FREE DAY AT THE MALL.
Working any job reproduces capital, so, really, the question is how much damage can you do from whatever job you happen to get? Fuck shit up, then on to the next burger joint!

If that was the absolute last resort and no other jobs were available and it was absolutely necessary for your survival, then go for it. But since you're contemplating making a career out of it, you should try to find a way to use your job to benefit the proletariat. :)

I agree with this. I would say that as long as you don't become a capitalist, you aren't too hypocritical.
