Some people do get compulsions to eat non-food stuff. I don't know how common it is though.
Pica (pronounced /ˈpaɪkə/ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_English) PYE-kə (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Pronunciation_respelling_key)) is a medical disorder characterized by an appetite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appetite) for substances largely non-nutritive (e.g. metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal) [coins,[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) knives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knife),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) razor blades (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Razor),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) etc.], clay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clay), coal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coal), soil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soil), feces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feces), chalk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chalk), pens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pen) and pencils (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) paper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper), batteries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) spoons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoon),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) toothbrushes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothbrush),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-stein-0) soap (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap), mucus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mucus), ash, gum, etc.) or an abnormal appetite for food ingredients (e.g. flour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flour), raw potato (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potato), raw rice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice), starch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starch), ice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice) cubes, salt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt)).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-1) In order for these actions to be considered pica, they must persist for more than one month at an age where eating such objects is considered developmentally (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellectual_development) inappropriate. The condition's name comes from the Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) word for magpie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magpie), a bird that is reputed to eat almost anything.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pica_%28disorder%29#cite_note-MentalHealth-2) Pica is seen in all ages, particularly in pregnant women (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy), small children, and those with developmental disabilities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developmental_disabilities).

I watched something on TV a few days ago about a woman who ate about a half roll of toilet paper per day.

I don't understand why they get addicted to things like this... I know it must be something psychological since I doubt any of those things carry physical addiction.. but still.

I'm not really sure either. It just seems so unlikely that anything would trigger someone to start doing something like that.

Im not trying to be funny, but how does she go crap? I don't think couch cushion would be digested very easily.

Is this something that they always have or something they develop?

I think they developed it..

Yeah, seems like she developed it at a early age. The video says she started eating cushion at around 10, around the time her parents were divorced.

That'd be weird if you walked in on someone eating some couch/chair cushion. I'd probably lol at first, not really believing it, but after seeing this, I'd probably be like.

Yeah, I feel like it is funny, but at the same time it really really isn't. I wonder if she is receiving any help for her addiction.

I think all the flavor of the cushion comes from people sitting on it and farting....:crying:

Yeah I know what you mean. Like people who have really odd phobias. (But then, who am I to talk with my phobia of mould of all things.)

A mold phobia makes sense, though. On top of being toxic (sometimes), mold reminds me of decay and death and is hella scary.

She isn't exactly distressed by it and it hasn't had any negative effect on her everyday life she even says she loves couch cushion and it tastes good. Also it sounds more like an OCD type thing than Pica.

Oh yes, as long as she isn't distressed by it that makes it okay...

"A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern generally associated with subjective distress or disability that occurs in an individual, and which are not a part of normal development or culture."
tbh i don't see why it isn't ok, maybe you could explain?

These compulsions can be very destructive especially when the material being eaten is harmful, like certain metals. I had a problem with paint chips when I was a kid, yes I ate paint chips when I was a kid, and while the damage I sustained was minimal, dyslexia and takes me longer to learn things, it can still be bothersome.

I think having an urge to eat non food things fits that rather well, but usually phobias and compulsions are caused by underlying psychological disorders.

Ok i apologize if what i said was offensive i've deleted it, i was thinking in terms of it being an abnormal eating habit which she was ok with and not in terms of it being something she has an irrational compulsion to do. It wasn't acceptable for me to make a joke about it. Thanks for calling me out on it.

It might be justified to be quite disgusted by mould, but it's kind of excessive that I can't bear to be anywhere near it and get freaked out by pictures of it.

If someone is addicted to eating couch cushions it's pretty obviously bad.
