You can hide your rep from being seen if it bothers you. I like seeing who has appreciated my posts and seeing the specific posts that were appreciated.

Actually my rep doesn't bother me at all...it's not baaaaad  Though I draw a line between thanking posts and then making a score out of it...I don't see that as entirely necessary...because really the whole score thing is just meaningless, as far as I'm concerned, and doesn't really show any difference between who is considered funny, who is considered to express interesting opinions eloquently, and who just picks out popular articles to post, that everybody thanks them for. Silly system! Meaningless number up there! Maybe I should hide it...

It's been a good couple of days. I met up with a huge group of old friends from high school and talking to them, realized that I am not nearly as much of a fuck up as I thought I was, considering I am working and going to school and I am not in jail for rape nor am I one of the many dumb scumbags that a lot of people I know have become.

I also scheduled myself for another Intro to Teaching class this semester. It turns out one of the professors is the one I had for the Intro class I failed last time around. He was apparently hella happy to see me back and told me "HANG IN THERE KID. YOU'RE GONNA DO ALRIGHT".

IF CAPITALISM IS SO BAD, HOW COME MY T-BONE STEAK WAS SO GOOD LAST NIGHT?

That's right, my friends, I cooked myself a T-Bone and ate it last night. If you have quality meat, the simplest way to cook it is to heat some oil very hot in a skillet or dutch oven (high walls of the Dutch oven keep the oil from splattering all over the kitchen.) Salt and pepper the steak and put it in there for about 2-4 minutes per side depending on thickness and how you like it cooked. Throw some chopped or sliced onions in there too and they cook right alongside each other. Mine was very thin so it cooked in about 3 minutes.

Grilling is great but it's simpler to fry, plus you get to stir those onions around with the meat.

Which is why I am AGAINST revolution.

I hope I don't get an infraction for saying "Dutch."

It's Palin's fault Lenin died.

Most people who hate Palin do so because she comes across as a combination of a "glad ass" and a cocky, over-confident know-it-all who doesn't know, or doesn't care, that she isn't prepared to occupy a national office. There are others who are jealous.

And there is another tranche that hates her because they are just hateful people.

Isn't this supposed to be the light-hearted chatter thread? :(

But if you want to get all serious about Sarah Palin, liberal antipathy toward her long pre-dates these "persecution complex" charges that evolved from the -- so far un-proved -- claim that she is responsible for the Arizona murders.

But it really doesn't matter. I don't think she isn't even going to run for president, never mind get elected. She just likes being in the public eye for some reason.

Sarah Palin is less interesting than the fear and loathing she generates. Which is itself ... not interesting.

I actually don't remember when I was joking and when not, but I really do think I know why she is hated, and it's deeper than this recent "persecution" business.

I'm just pissed off that I didn't catch that Frosty Snowman guy who says he's a Misean in Palestine doing a research project. He and I had a brief exchange about Miseans in the learning thread, and he wrote something in one post that sounded odd. I should have smelled a rat. I can smell a rat, you know.

Cause I've lived among the rat. Lived like the rat, hunted with the rat, hunted the rat, been hunted by the rat, become one with the rat, eaten the rat. I know my rats.

That's probably the worst way to cook a steak and the most potentially carcinogenic.

Oh, boo-hoo. "OMG it might be carcinogenic!!1!111!!one!!1!" is such a lame and pathetic reason to avoid something. Personally I consider myself lucky to have been born in an era where I'd even have a chance to grow old enough to die of cancer.

Not found in France

I've often been intrigued by the absence, in France, of certain foodstuffs that are popular in the English-speaking world. A striking example is the cut of meat known (in my native Australia) as a T-bone steak. In France, there's another missing meat product: bacon, as served up with eggs for breakfast. The French do indeed eat a pork product referred to as bacon, but it's not exactly the genuine stuff.

http://skyvington.blogspot.com/2010/09/not-found-in-france.html

I think they must have T-bones in France, but the super rich buy them all up from the butchers and have them sent to places like this:

Interestingly enough, it is only in John, when asked by the high priests whether he is the messiah does he say "it is so." In the other gospels he replies "you say it is so."

Oh, I know the Gospel of John. Wasn't that the really late, kind of Jew-hating 'BAR KOKHBA ISN'T THE FUCKING MESSIAH (also please don't kill us, Mr Romans, we're not Jews, promise...)' gospel? Yeeeeeah! I'll pin my understanding of historical Jesus on a somewhat earlier account. Matthew for the win! :thumbup1:

Well recent comments by the medical profession suggest that 30% of cancers may be due to meat consumption added to which frying with extremely hot oil is a very bad idea.

Added to which, meat already contains enough fat in itself that you don't really need to fry in oil. However by frying you don't lose the fat that may burn too and ruin the taste.

Slow grilled is best in order to lose the excess fat and avoid burning, however you shouldn't char it either.

BTW- why the fuck would I want to read some British newspaper's food column.... LOL!!!

But then again, I don't share the obsession that Daily Mail journalists (http://kill-or-cure.heroku.com/) and seemingly the rest of the affluent world in general have with cancer and it's prevention thereof through lifestyle choices.

The World Health Organization has determined that dietary factors account for at least 30 percent of all cancers in Western countries and up to 20 percent in developing countries. When cancer researchers started to search for links between diet and cancer, one of the most noticeable findings was that people who avoided meat were much less likely to develop the disease. Large studies in England and Germany showed that vegetarians were about 40 percent less likely to develop cancer compared to meat eaters.

Of course, it's all very well saying that vegetarians are less likely to develop cancer, but what about other variables? Someone who goes to the trouble of excluding meat from their diet is also less likely to smoke (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=HI5kEhBBphcC&pg=PA31&lpg=PA31&dq=vegetarians+smoke+less&source=bl&ots=rt4v61rXRY&sig=RO07V39Q3TiYhMUIPHMXk76cElo&hl=en&ei=Nxc8TfrDO4GHhQflnaHJCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CCQQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=vegetarians%20smoke%20less&f=false), likely to drink less, and tend to take better care of their health in general.

@NoXion

Point 1- Because it's chatter.... not a thread on the subject.

Point 2- Yes, but we weren't talking about that, were we?

Point 3- I didn't say that though did I champ?

Point 4- So discussing recipes and food does not normally entail the best preparation methods with a view to enjoyment, health and nutrition? Yeah... right.

Point 5- I didn't say it was a troll- crass, probably.

Point 6- The use of the expression "scare-story" says it all. Re the earlier post, I presume the radio waves thing, well the sum total of your discussion was to accept the mainstream view despite other evidence, refuse outright to consider any other possibilities and reject anything that might challenge a position you hold. How very unscientific.

Point 7- Don't even try and twist this round to such a crass and low position. Cancer is something that effects a lot of people, myself included viz my family, and is something that a lot of people are concerned about- connected to all kinds of things that are also issues here at RevLeft. Your crass and insensitive comments that basically accused me of "making things up" coupled with your overbearing arrogance in what was basically a harmless comment on a fucking cooking method led me to point out your insensitivity.

No one was trying to win an argument, this reveals more about your approach to discussion here, it makes no difference to me fundamentally and I don't see things as "winning" or "losing" all the time. Quite frankly the over-competitiveness about such things here at RevLeft and all this bullshit about who "pwned" who in arguments etc etc all the fucking time is quite childish.

I actually think it's lack of liquid in the cooking. If you stuff with onions and celery and apple, and put a half cup of chicken broth in bottom of pan, the steam should keep it moist. Also you can turn it breast down for a half hour. This browns the back of the bird and moistens the breast.

Then you slice the breast thinly and fry it in extremely hot oil with some onions to bring out the taste.

How dare you, olde boy?

It's set before WWI, so I'm glad there's been progress, but I'll bet it's close to the way things were. What I really like about the series is that it presents the humanity -- good and bad -- in representatives of all classes. There is that odious footman, for example, and it just occurs to me he's both bad and gay. I can't remember the last american film I saw where the gay guy is a villain. That scene where the dower dowager gives the rose cup to the little gardener was lifted from a 40's movie with Greer GarGarson, but I can't remember the name.

Wow, apparently some people (http://straightjacking.blogspot.com/2011/01/flexible-gracie-glam.html) like to "review" internet porn videos now. It's a funny and interesting post though (and apparently safe for work as well). Here's a small quote:

"Folks, what the fuck happened? Pornography used to be such a beautiful art, with its kinkiness and open-mindness about new tactics and positions. Sure, it was the 70's, 80's and 90's, and yeah, they still didn't shave the pubic hair, but it was all about mutual pleasure. And that's what made it special. It felt real. It felt like something that could really happen. Something that you could watch with your partner and enhance your relationship, or something that you knew could happen with you in the future."

..."But no, we abandoned it all for petty aggressiveness and throat grabbing"....

Well, I guess we can expect more shootings, both by and of cops:

Noting the Oregon and Indiana shootings occurred during so-called "routine traffic stops," Roberts said, "The word routine should be eliminated from the job. There's no such thing. There is only 'known risk' and 'unknown risk' " he said.

You hear that? We're now guilty until proven innocent, an "unknown risk". It's not like the cops particularly trusted citizens in the first place (unless that citizen is a rich white male).

Here is the status of the police shooting investigations on Monday:

Indianapolis police say they arrested Thomas Hardy in the shooting of Officer David Moore, who was shot in the face and body and remained in a coma.
A manhunt continued in the Oregon beach town of Waldport for a gunman who shot officer Steven Dodds, 45, a six-year veteran of the Lincoln City Police Department. Police were looking for the owner of a 1984 Dodge truck that fled the shooting scene.
In Detroit, four officers shot inside their precinct were recovering, police said. Investigators said Lamar Moore, 38, of Detroit entered the 6th Precinct on the city's northwest side about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and shot Cmdr. Brian Davis, Officer David Anderson; Sgt. Ray Saati; and Sgt. Carrie Schulz. Officers returned fire and killed Moore, who was scheduled to be sentenced Monday for his role in a double homicide, they said.
One of two deputies wounded in Port Orchard, Wash., was released from the hospital while another remained in satisfactory condition after being wounded Sunday in a gunfight. A suspect and a female victim who came running to his aid were killed. Police were investigating how the female victim was shot. The gunman was identified as Anthony A. Martinez, 31, of Salt Lake City. The Deseret News said police had issued an endangered persons advisory for a 13-year-old runaway believed to be traveling with Martinez.
In St. Petersburg, Fla., a suspected gunman was found dead after two police officers were shot to death and a U.S. marshal was injured as they tried to make an arrest. Suncoast Benevolent Association President Mark Marland identified the fallen officers as Tom Baitinger and Jeffrey Yaslowitz.
In Miami, thousands of law enforcement officers gathered at a funeral service in American Airlines Arena to honor Roger Castillo, 41, Amanda Haworth, 44, who were killed on Thursday while serving a warrant on a suspected killer. The suspect, 22-year-old Johnny Simms, was killed by another officer.
America. Fuck yeah.

Seriously, if my Neopolitain Countessa and I do move to Sicily we would like to buy one of their castilos and live EXACTLY like them (only with modern plumbing--and we would be better Catholics.)

Ah well.... in Italy we'd have to poison you like the Borgia or the Medici...etc- and the only way out would be to "seal" an alliance through marriage.

As for aristocrats, there are a few of them around but their titles etc have no validity under the Republic- it's just a tradition really and nothing else. There "titles" were turned into surnames too and that's about it.

Seriously, you'd never guess this badboy was 100% animal-friendly :tt1: For those who haven't been totally brainwashed by Earthlings (), feel free to substitute in the more luxurious option...real cream...

150g milk-free margarine
6 tablespoons cocoa powder
½ cup (soya-)cream
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup flour
100g dark chocolate (say 80%)
100g hazelnuts

Melt margarine. Whisk in cocoa powder and let cool. In the mean time, whisk sugar and (soya-)cream until it is 'airy'. Chop up chocolate and hazelnuts. Stir margarine-cocoa mixture into the sugar-cream mixture. Whisk. Add baking power and flour and continue whisking. Stir in chocolate and hazelnuts. Spread onto a prepared form and bake for 40 minutes at 150°C (300°F)

I don't like the idea that we have a police force that enforces the law, there is a big difference between "serve and protect" and ENFORCEMENT! I don't like the idea that police forces seem to have become the armed wing of government or the state-militia.

On the other hand, if some of the people here with their vile rhetoric found themselves being broken into at night by a burglar or were in a terrible accident, or witnessed a shooting or were even victims (God forbid) then I am sure they would dial 911.

They quite literally do, Bud.

They aren't bad people.

Many of them are. We can talk a bit about recruitment and indoctrination if you'd like. The personality types drawn into the police force are very similar. I've witnessed this through youth work. Aside from this the police force itself as a power structure is bad, corrupt, racist and dominates the general population as opposed to serving it. There isn't a service the police provide that the communities cannot provide for themselves. There is no community control over the police force.

No you don't. the every day of regular people'sw problemsw hung out to dry and a policeman solves it all. It happens a millon times a day.

Working with communities particularly effected by police intimidation, violence and general corruption and talking with/mediating public assemblies and spokes councils with police chiefs, bike patrols, anti-gang units has given me quite a diverse view on the issue past your realm of understanding. When a community organizes against a dominating and undesirable force it does its homework, Bud. We are not yelling at cars we're organizing and pushing for genuine change.

YEA, SOME ARE BAD. I understand that but by far most are good and want to do good. They don't need to be KILLED!

The evidence of police involvement in corrupt activity including unnecessary violence in the form of trumped charges, harassment, physical assaults, killings and combinations of all, against people from the communities they are supposed to be serving is wide spread- chronic even. You are simply misinformed and very incorrect on this issue. In regards to killings, I of course would approach every unique situation as it is.

That's just barbaric. Really.

We would have to discuss specific instances. What's barbaric are situations where police murder and literally get off free. Where police give false report details, plant evidence, beat, kill and then target those people in the community effected who take a stand against it.

I don't know if you can do that--I don't know if I can. But it's worth a try. Lets's find out the truth. OK?

I responded a bit to this in the first portion of my post and edited out part of your paragraph accordingly. Aside from the existence of police as we have it now being unnecessary I'll comment that if the daily tasks of a cop are strenuous enough on that individual to yield the unwarranted murders and brutalization of unarmed civilians that we frequently see then they are simply not fit to serve and should be immediately removed from duty and face disciplinary action outside of the jurisdiction of the Bureau, Internal Affairs.

My intense and burning hatred for cops would be significantly lessened if there was an actual way to defend yourself against them while you are being assaulted by them or if they were held to the same standard as any other person would be when it comes to things like executing a person on a subway platform in front of a train full of people and youtube.

I know that was just one instance of police brutality, but you knew way beforehand that whatever sentence the cop involved got was going to be far more lenient than any person without a badge would have gotten. Anybody could have told you that because it's common knowledge that cops are held to a different standard, if they're held to one at all.

And that's why people hate cops. Because they have a badge and a gun and that means they don't always have to answer to the same laws as regular people do, and we know it. Law Enforcement's a rotten institution.

I have no problem with you or anyone else not "liking" the police. People like and dislike what they want. My problem is with the idea of in any way harming them. If they do wrong they should be punished by the appropriate authorities and if you or I do wrong we should be punished by the appropriate authorities.

And cops shouldn't be above the law, BUT they have a job to do and they should be respected for that.

Oh come on. I agreed to not celebrate the death of every cop with an ice cream cake and streamers but this is going too far.

I don't respect them because the majority of their actions don't affect working class communities anywhere close to the extremes that their actual purpose and actual conduct does (in a negative way).

I again think it deserves a thread if there's going to be lengthy replies.

At the same time the people preaching "cop killing" here would probably be the fist to dial 911 if something bad happened etc.

Nobody is advocating cop killing.

It is a joke.

But what isn't a joke is that I literally don't care if a cop gets shot.

See, that's crap.

I care if a cop gets shot--I ALSO CARE if a citizen (even if he is a scumbag) gets shot.

Let's attribute it to difference in experiences and we'll leave it at that.

what cop experience traumatized you?
