Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc'' Duvalier was reportedly arrested Tuesday at a Port-au-Prince hotel after he received visits from secret police that terrorized the country during his rule from 1971 to 1986.http://www.allheadlinenews.com/images/cp.gif Police surrounded and secured the posh Karibe Hotel in Petionville as Judge Gabriel Ambroise and Haitian attorney Reynold Georges met with Duvalier. The 59-year-old Duvalier was then seen exiting the hotel at noon via a white police van escorted by a SWAT team. There were no words yet where he went or was taken.
Duvalier, who was ousted in a popular revolt in 1986, ended a 25-year exile in France on Sunday. The timing of his return sparked rumors that he may seek a political comeback as the country is mired in a crisis on who should succeed outgoing president Rene Preval.
Three candidates are contesting the runoff elections: Jude Celestin, Preval’s pick; opposition figure Michel Martelly and former first lady Mirlande Manigat. With local and international pressure to replace Celestin and let Martelly and Manigat dispute the presidential runoff elections, rumors are spreading that Preval invited Duvalier to be a likely alternative candidate.
Duvalier’s camp denied the speculation, insisting that the former leader never spoke to anyone in Haiti prior to his surprise return.
Before his arrest, relatives and old time friends also visited him at the hotel.
Meanwhile, the U.S. and Canada issued statements denouncing his return. Victims of Duvalier’s crackdown against journalists joined human rights organizations’ call for his arrest and prosecution.
The French ambassador in Haiti, Didier Le-Bret, denied that Paris plotted Duvalier’s return.
