Fight the BNP, how to do it? opinions sought.

Just a comment about the rise of ultra-nationalism/facism in the UK, particularly Northern England.

When the mainstream media continues to give the oxygen of publicity to the bogus,(in my view) asylum seeker issue this legitimises the policies of the British National Party. New (conservative) Labour continue to behave as if the refugees who come to Britain looking for freedom from oppression and freedom of expression are responsible for most of the social ills in the UK. This stance legitimises the tabloid medias reactionary campaign of hate against asylum seekers which in turn provides an excellent and free recruiting campaign for the BNP.

The question is, who to campaign against and ultimately smash first. The Media organisation, Blair and his reactionary cronies or the under-educated footsoldiers of the BNP.

You don't need to tell me that they are nazis ric.

However, the problem is, in my view, that the mainstream (tabloid) media in the UK are doing an excellent PR job for the BNP, as are Mr Prescott and Mr Blunkett, (My MP!) The BNP came second in the ward in which I work in Sheffield. This is an area with a large Pakistani immigrant population. I often hear people in Sheffield who 20 years ago would have been Old Labour voters who now vote BNP. The only reason for this rise is the media giving credence in whatever way to the racist policies of these BNP facists. How to start a camaign which tells the truth about the asylum lie is the answer. I read that the BNP were now campaigning in sunderland, population about 280,000 on the platform of asylum seekers taking jobs from local people. At last count there were less than 200 asylum seekers in sunderland!

Expose the lies and the facists will wither and hopefully die. :ph34r:

Yeah - the way to do it is to parachute in busloads of students with big yellow lollipops and megaphones to scream 'BNP is a Nazi party' at anyone going into a polling station.

I sort of agree with Ernest. Not to critisise the laudible aims of the ANL but they seem to be very similar to many other left-wing organisations in the UK such as the SWM, RCP etc. That is dominated by students and middleclass liberals (othing against either of these two groups particularly). However in order to stop the growth of the BNP the people to reach are the working classes living on the large inner city and out of town council estates where the BNP thrive. This is also the challenge that the left has historically failed to rise to in the UK in order to build a vital and vibrant left wing.

The left is losing this one comrades and it scares the shit out of me! :ph34r:

The ANL's aims are good and should be supported by all socialists, communists and anti-facsists!

However the ANL's methods are wrong and have led to a general failure of the anti-fascist movement.

This is partly to blame for the fact that whilst the ANL is in theory a broad movement, it started off and remains an SWP 'front group'. The problem with this is that the SWP will use the ANL for recriuting members and thus it is not able to focus on it's original aim of fighting the BNP and NF.

Also the ANL has lost alot of it's early radicalism and no longer 'physically' confronts fascism. As Ernie said it now just waves yellow lollipops.

My advice is to join up with the AFA (Anti-Fascist Action). The AFA is mainly anarchist and libertarian communist and non-Leninist, however given that it fights the fascists using more violent means and is not afraid to break the law at anti-fascist demos (the UK police side with the fascists anyway) it is more effective than the yellow lollipop club (ANL).

In the 1990's the BNP were kicked of the streets when we used the AFA methods of direct action and violent harrasement of the BNP/NF. It worked as the BNP were kicked out of London (London was the NF/BNP stronghold in the 70's and 80's) and even today with the BNP taking seats up north in Oldham and Burnley, the BNP are not big in London.

To all of those who are going to reply back to me with the 'anti-fascist violence will give sympathy/support to the BNP/NF and will damage our cause' line, heres my reply:

The BNP/NF/C18 have all used violence against left-wingers, anti-fascists and other opponents. They beat up, burn, attack, stab and shoot at us and yet the media and the public in general don't give a shit about this violence. The fascist violence does NOT damage the far-right's image and so they attack us with no constraints. We should therefore defend ourselves and answer their attacks with more violent and deadly attacks and not cease in our offensive until the far-right is destroyed and all BNP/NF members driven out or 'worse'.

It should be made clear that the BNP are not somehow 'respectable' because they wear suits. They have links with Combat 18 and believe the same things. They are Nazis. Fighting Fascism is a priority, but it should not come at the expense of forgetting that the Fascists are ulitimatly Capitalists. It is in Conservative Party magazines that you see quotes like 'Every 7 seconds a immigrant enters Britain'. As has allready been pointed out Blunket and co indirectly ally with them.

I applaud the Anarchists in this case. There should be something along the lines of a 'United Front' against the Fascists and also Bush's Imperialism. They are prepared to go outside the law, I know personally two members of the NCP who recieved all soughts of hate mail and threats by C18. But while this sought of thing goes on the Media proclaimes 'Far Left Fanatics gather in Burnley to look for a fight'.

The BNP are Scary! We have just set up a Socialist party in Lincolnshire (pm me for details) and I have just done a speech on racism so inevitably the BNP came up! I visited there site and as long as you are white and British your okay! These fascist bastards claim they are not racist but then go on to rebuke mixed race relationships!!! we disscussed this in great depth and then made a rough plan about how to fight them!
