It's 30 years old, but Edward Said's A Question of Palestine is an excellent book and very good read. It gives a fine picture of how Palestinian national consciousness developed, the European colonial roots of Zionism, some decent description of the PLO operated in the 60s and 70s. Said is a beautiful and quite accessible writer.
