View Full Version : God as the Final Boss (video/computer game related)

I don't know where to put this thread at but has anyone noticed that in most video/computer games (such as Painkiller, Dante's Inferno, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow) usually have Satan/Lucifer as the final boss but there isn't a single game that allows you to kill God (although the closest ones are JRPGs)?
Gets to show how Abrahamic faiths are still deeply rooted and subtly still rules society that it seems that no game developer so far has the courage to explore the concept of killing the Abrahamic God without sprouting controversy but yet killing Pre-Christian gods/goddesses like in the God of War series seems to be strangely accepted...
I think in a Post-Revolutionary society, I think people will be making games with God as the final boss...

If you can kill it, it isn't the Abrahamic God.

Xenogears has you kill God, but it's sort of an allegory for Gnosticism (that is, you kill the Demiurge which is the evil creator God and not the good God of wisdom). That's as close as I've ever come to fighting God in a video game.

In Assassins Creed 2 you get to strangle the pope, that to me seems far more satisfying than killing some poor souls' imaginary friend.

What they could do, actually, but never will - because it would have huge and insane theological implications and cause a lot of controversy is have you face off against Jesus at the time of the 2nd coming as depicted in the Revelation of St. John the divine. He'd have like 999,999,999 HP, every magic spell, and is invulnerable to all your attacks because you chose to be a black mage.
Of course this would fly in the face of most brands of Christianity because Jesus is suppose to be God in human form, and his defeat in the game would mean the game world would have to either end as he actually was God (if the Abrahamic God is omnipresent and essentially operates as a "metaphysical binding glue", or "Indra's net" how could reality continue without this force?), or it would continue, showing he was an extremely powerful ascended spiritual being (the Demiurge perhaps?), but not the Monad.

In several you kill characters that become Demi-Gods, but that's not exactly the same.
In Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 you fight God, but it's more of a demiurge. I think any developer that would let you fight the fully powered Abrahamic "God" is loopy.

In Shin Megami Tensei II you can fight the Abrahamic God.

He's right though. The concept of God being anything other than an ultimate figure of good is seen as completely unacceptable in most countries. Religion and religious culture will never be seperated from our society until we remove it by force.

Homicide is when you kill a person. The term for killing God is deicide. Just saying.

That's different. I don't think there's ever been a well-known game where you kill the abrahamic god.

Except that more and more people in Europe are identifying as atheists as time goes on but please don't let facts get in the way of your nonsense.

But so many people in America, Africa, the Middle-East and Asia are still extremely religious. Europe isn't the only continent in the world.

All I'm saying is that clearly there are other ways to get rid of religiosity. Like not caring and improving education and things like that

In Shadow Hearts series, in the first one you can kill what could be presumed to be the "judeo-christian god" but it's arguable. Also, in the middle part of the game you kill some major Chinese deity/demi-god In the 2nd game, you kill in the last battle a major Japanese god (possibly Amaratsu herself but I'm not sure and I don't think so).
The first Shadow Hearts where this occur was a cult hit/sleeper hit (previewers, etc didn't saw it coming/didn't predict it would be popular; but it was). Contemporary with FFX, when both games got initially released one magazine gave Shadow Hearts a low score and FFX a perfect score but later on, particularly with the release of the second Shadow Hearts they re-scored those 2 games giving Shadow Hearts a higher score and FFX a lower one.
