I know the traditional way of drawing the circle A is so that the horizontal line of the A makes a normal A, but a more modern usage extends the line beyond the A, and sometimes beyond the circle itself. Is there any meaning, both overt or assumed, to using either symbol?

More modern.

How is this 'more modern' rather than a variation?

I simply meant modern as in it came later. I've seen both still used today, which is why I posed the question.

If you're trying to ask, do they mean different things within Anarchism, or something similar? Then no, it's just one person's way of making the "A" different.

My best guess would be that the extended circle A came from punk culture.

I guess if you wanted to look as bad ass and against the establishment as possible you would put the extended one on your clothes and spray paint it on walls.

I am more used with the A completely getting outside the circle, i mean all 3 lines getting out and from the up A creates an X... From what i have come across during my last 3 years of been an Anarchist, i have never seen anywhere that they have a different meaning between them, its just different styles expressing one and only thing. Wikipedia. It pretty much says what John "Eh" McDonald says. But I was wondering if there was more to it. If something like "theory" driven anarchism preferred the traditional one, and more action oriented ones preferred the later one.

I think if anarchists want people to take them seriously they should use the more traditional one. It looks more organized and hasn't had its name completely used out of context by the general public, as far as I'm aware.
