Does anyone know anything about a Revolution in Tunisia? I was told by a Tunisian comrade there was something going down.

The government has started to release prisoners. That is a sign of extreme weakness. The President also sacked the Minister of the Interior.

Not promising. I've been following discussions in the French-speaking press and had an interesting chat with a Tunisian comrade. The general idea I get is, that:

a) Because government repression in Tunisia is so thorough (and has been for a long time), there is no organized political opposition whatsoever, so there's really no-one ready to step in and replace Ben Ali. One should beware that the so-called "coups" being announced may be little more than a cosmetic head-change.

b) The repressive governments in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco (which last country hasn't exploded yet, but has been simmering for a long time) are totally dependent on US and especially French interests, and the French Gov't is obviously not going to lift a finger to allow more than a cosmetic change, unless thoroughly embarrassed by the violence of the repression. Me,personally, I would prefer to see these governments thoroughly embarrassed by progressive groups in France and elsewhere, slightly less bloodshed involved. And that was a hint.

According to the AP, there is a government imposed curfew in Tunis (http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ioo0B0nXH1BTLRcX2fwJ3G0CvaqQ?docId=a8c64f473 d1746238fd7a2e4ef62a9bd). It reads like the situation there is pretty unstable. I know diddly about the internal politics of Tunisia but the article seems to have some interesting basics.

The media is not doing very well to provide footage of our Brothers and Sisters resisting in Tunisia.

I found a good channel on youtube showing the resistance for those who are interested.

This is URL for the Guardian's coverage of the situation in Tunisia: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/tunisia They've got a live feed and some backgrounder and editorial comments worth reading.

This is Al Jazeera's http://english.aljazeera.net/category/country/tunisia

I'd consider them the two most reliable English language sources.
