View Full Version : Communication in a communist/anarchist society

While I wholly do believe that communism will work, how will we communicate with other workers from various different countries with various different languages to encourage agitation and encourage a proletarian uprising? Once we get there, how will communes be able to communicate amongst each other? Although the proletarian values would largely be the same, I think language barriers can possibly contribute to feelings of alienation. I myself wouldn't mind learning different languages and such, but I'm sure there will be people who either do not possess the talent to learn multiple different languages, or are not too keen of the idea. How do you propose that this would work?

I don't really understand what you're worried about, telecommunications will still exist in a post-capitalist society, we're not advocating a 'year zero'.

I apologize if I sound ignorant; I'm still trying to get a grasp on Marxist theory, and I still have much to learn. Thanks for the answer, though.

The areas/councils/groups that would be communicating globally would have translators. With increased opportunties at education and travel, more people would be likely to become interested in foreign languages and cultures, leading to more people knowing multiple languages.
I don't think language barries would be more of a problem than they are now. Global businesses survive, after all.

Keep in mind Communism comes long after Socialism.
I would expect that under Communism, there would be a universal language everyone could understand.
Under socialism, however, different languages and the need for translators will still exist.

You mean like how alot of countries teach kids English as a second language, as well as their primary language?

That's exactly what I mean.
A universal second language should.... And most likely will be constructed under Socialism.

While I do agree with what Chapayev said, I still found this hilarious.

Whenever I hear people talking about this sort of thing, I always picture those people from the future in that old South Park episode. The one where all world languages have come to be one, of course this classic line.

Language will be irrelevant -- everyone will be so "in-tune" with the general social situation and with each other that the slightest emotional nuance of body language will carry profound yet clear and unmistakable meaning, to be absorbed from observation and instinctively reacted to in response....
What? You *haven't* seen the movie 'Zardoz' -- ? Ready to go to "Second Level"...?
