JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel police were investigating a video on Monday circulated on the Internet which called for the death of a top legal official who urged a probe into anti-Arab incitement on Facebook.
"An investigation has been opened looking into the background, where it was put together and recorded and based on the threats heard in the video," said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.
"We are taking this very seriously."
The video, which reportedly called for the death of deputy Attorney General Shai Nitzan, was distributed through an e-mail that appeared to be sent from the account of Justice Minister Yaacov Neeman.
Neeman's office released a statement denying any connection to the video and said a complaint had been filed with police.
"A complaint has been filed with the police and we are sure they will carry out an in-depth investigation until the culprits are found."
"The contents of the video are very grave and we completely condemn them," the statement said.
Media outlets that watched the video said it called for the death of Nitzan, who last week recommended investigating several anti-Arab pages on Facebook for incitement, including one called "Death to Arabs."
The video expressed anger that Nitzan had not called for probes into similar sites that incite against Jews.
Reports about the video were widely condemned in Israel, including by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
"Incitement and death threats toward the legal system undermine the democratic values of the state of Israel," he said in a statement.
