How and why did they change the handle of the sickle into a ball? What's the deal with that? Surely you can't cut anything with a tool that has a ball for a handle. Obviously, practical considerations of design are much less relevant when it comes to the symbolic representation of an object, but still, why ditch a more realistic representation for a frickin' ball handle? WTF?

I figured that Chinese sickles looked like that.

And of course you can hold a ball for a handle, as long as it's large enough.

i couldnt find a sickle with a handle of that type. im guessing its just stylistic.

the soviet union had a few different flags.

They probably just wanted a symbol that was both 1. obviously a hammer and a sickle 2. obviously not the soviet hammer and sickle.
