BILBAO, Spain – Tens of thousands of people marched in Spain's Basque region on Saturday to protest the government policy of shipping separatist prisoners convicted of terror to jails far from their homes.
The protest came amid increasing speculation that the violent separatist Basque group ETA is mulling a permanent cease-fire.
At least 40,000 people carrying Basque flags and banners demonstrated peacefully in the northern city of Bilbao. They carried banners in the Basque language reading "Rights for the prisoners," "Amnesty" and "Return prisoners to the Basque country."
ETA has been weakened by years of arrests and declining grass-roots support. Batasuna, ETA's banned political wing, has called on the militants to renounce their 40-year armed struggle for an independent Basque homeland.
"Neither the return of prisoners nor the end to this conflict are going to happen overnight," said separatist spokesman Inaki Olasolo, an indication that ETA was not yet ready to declare its final cease fire.
In September ETA announced its 11th cease-fire in its four decades of violence, but it did not mention the word permanent nor did it say it would be prepared to destroy its stockpile of arms.
Spain's government has repeatedly said progress in the troubled northern region will only come about when ETA renounces violence for good.
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero rejected September's cease-fire announcement, describing it as militant's gambit to buy time, regroup and rearm.
ETA's last deadly attack was a July 2009 car bomb that killed two policemen on the island of Mallorca. The group is considered a terrorist organization by Spain, the European Union and the United States and has killed more than 825 people since the late 1960s.

"Egin dezagun urratsa"

Demonstration in Bilbao in favour of prisoners rights

The demonstration, organized by the Basque movement "Egin dezagun urratsa" was backed by political parties and social organizations.

organized by the Basque movement "Egin dezagun urratsa" marched through the Basque city of Bilbao on Saturday to demand more rights for jailed members of the armed Basque separatist group ETA.

According to the online edition of the Basque newspaper Gara (http://www.gara.net/paperezkoa/20110108/241924/es/La-manifestacion-Bilbo-supera-5000-adhesiones), the website of mentioned group was supported by 5,000 people. Moreover, the demostration was backed by the Basque left wing party, Basque Nationalist EA party, Aralar, Alternatiba and Abertzaleen Batasuna, the association of relatives of Basque separatists armed group ETA prisoners Etxerat, and several trade unions such as ELA, LAB, ESK, STEE-EILAS, EHNE and Hiru.

The demonstration started at 5,30pm from Aita Donosti square in Bilbao under the slogan "Egin dezagun urratsa. Eskubide guztiekin euskal presoak, Euskal Herrira" ("Let’s take a step forward. With all their rights, Basque prisoners to the Basque Country").

The rally was organized on November 13th by several representatives of the political, social and trade unions sphere during an event that took place in Durango (Bizkaia) where they denounced the violation of prisoners rights.
Pedraz allows Basque prisoner march, advises caution

Judge Santiago Pedraz ordered Security Forces to keep close watch on the march to ensure there is no endorsement of terrorism.
Pedraz gave his permission for the protest at the same time as he advised security forces to organise close patrols to ensure that no acts take place that aim to promote terrorism.

The judge, on duty this week, made the ruling at the request of Public Prosecutor Jesus Alonso during an act in which he concluded that there was no "basis for supposing that either ETA or any terrorist organisation is behind the call (to protest)... or that there is any intention to endorse (ETA), its methods or its members, or to discredit or humiliate any of its victims".

The Association for Victims of Terrorism (AVT), Dignity and Justice and Voices Against Terrorism all called for the march to be forbidden claiming that to hold the demonstration would be committing the crime of praising terrorism and that demanding recognition of the rights of Basque political prisoners "is nothing more than an excuse to pay tribute to the members of ETA".

Al Jazeera's Inside Story - ETA's struggle

Spain's crackdown on members of the Basque separatist organisation ETA is continuing - even though the group has announced a permanent ceasefire. Two suspected ETA members were arrested in a joint operation by Spanish and French police, less than 24 hours after the group said its struggle for Basque independence would now be conducted using dialogue, rather than the armed struggle.

Does anyone know of any English language websites regarding the region/ETA ?

It seems to be quite hard to keep up to date, and even when it's reported in our media, you can be sure it's biased.

thanks
