Heres a "good" documentary on racism in Britain. An Asian couple move into a mostly white estate in Bristol, filming their experiences. Its quite sad :(

in b4 this thread turns into the usual way when something bad is reported on here i.e. everyone just shows their outrage in various ways (not that we shouldnt be outraged)

One of the most common (and oft ignored) racism in the UK is against Travellers/Gypsies, the extent that it is virtually state-sanctioned.

I think it's interesting how, most notably since the economic crisis of the 1970s-80s, racism in the UK has shifted from discrimination against certain biological aspects of an ethnic group to perceived cultural differences. Those from Asian backgrounds, for example, are reproached with having families that are too large and therefore overpopulating Britain. Or quite an obvious one is against immigrants from 'Islamic' countries for (purportedly) oppressing women - a whole group of people are homogenized and packed into a neat little box. The mass media clearly plays a part in contributing to this sort of narrative. As if sexism & misogamy, or having larger than normal families is exclusive to certain racial or ethnic groups. Anyhow, the bottom line is, of course, someone should not be judged on the basis of their cultural-racial background.
Another thing: something I find highly ironic is that immigration is always more beneficial to the host country for reasons such as a cheaper pool of labour etc., yet immigrants are reproached for somehow 'stealing' jobs. (I say country, but obviously I mean for the ruling classes of that country. The supplementary supply of cheap labour helps to keep aggregate wages down.) And finally, a weird thing about this video is that it is in Bristol, which I see as quite a multicultural area, so therefore you might think that because so many different nationalities and cultures mix, then people would generally be a bit more tolerant. But that's not the case, at least in this documentary it isn't; not that I want to downplay this kind of racism at all, but especially with programs like this, they really tend to sensationalize such an issue. Maybe because this is the BBC, that isn't so prevalent. But anyway I have this because I moved homes several years ago from suburban London, where my peers at school where from Pakistani, Indian, Brazilian, Polish, and Greek backgrounds, most of them from first or second generation immigrant families. Then I moved to the south-west where I was in a school to which attended only white Christians. That's just some general musings to put out there.

this has nothing to do with class issues tbh, we shouldn't care about combating racism or support minorities organizing against it, it will just go away with communism /endtroll
In all seriousness, racism is obviously disgusting. I don't live in Europe so I don't know the extent of it, but people often talk about the rise of the BNP and incidents like the ones covered in the video. And then you have the polls about how a large number of people believe that Islam might "take over" Britain, etc.
Thanks for posting.

The media is obviously a major contributor. Newspaper like the daily mail create misconceptions and help feed stereotypes and prejudices.

Interesting video.
Ronit Lentin, in a well regarded book on integration in Ireland, came up with a figure of 50% of the population harbouring some racist views. No doubt there is an existing level there which simply continues out of ignorance and is continually fuelled by Daily Mail type journalism.
I can't see the BNP becoming much of a threat in the UK, they seem to have got involved in the type of infighting that these right-wing groups always get involved in.
