Was there a funeral?

I had a funeral for a squirrel once. It frequented a backyard area and one day I found it dead. We layed it on a bunch of sticks and set it on fire with magnifying glasses while my friend recited an ancient earth prayer. Yeah we were like ten.

Hey CM, my wife wants know how you cook the Baccala!

Please. :)

First you have to leave the baccalà in sweet water for about two days, in the refrigerator is best and change the water a couple of times- otherwise it will be too salty. This softens it too. When you are ready clean it up and remove the bones. Cut it into even slices.

Lightly fry some garlic in the oil and add the baccalà slices.

Let them cook for about 10-12 minutes and then add tomatoes, finely chopped onions, some anchovies and continue until you have a nice sauce. When it's ready add fresh parsley and serve with cooked beans.

There are lots of ways you can cook baccalà, but the important thing is the soaking time otherwise it's horrible.

(well, we actually had to put it down to prevent him from suffering, we didnt wait for the poor thing to die). Cried like a baby that night.

Pascal Burke, was captured during an attempted armed robbery at Ashford, Co Wicklow, in May 1998 where a RIRA activist, Rónán MacLochlainn, was shot dead by Gardai. The security forces had prior knowledge that an armed unit planned to hold up a Securicor van.

The Real Irish Republican Army.

What do you think about the Omagh bombing by the way?

Marxist don't support terrorism.

Your being restricted on an internet forum is not the same as someone being shot dead and whatever the political convictions of the person involved in the incident your comparison just shows the ignorant level of crassness we have grown to expect from you.

RevLeft rules you may care to read...

Always understand that the state is monitoring this website. It is a fact.

No explosives, no weapons, no drugs

It is against the guidelines to discuss, promote, glorify, instruct, agitate or incite the practice of terrorism, the art of weapons manufacturing, the making, distribution or selling of explosives or weapons and of illegal narcotics: Anyone posting such information will have it removed and could potentially be banned. It not only puts you at risk, it puts other users and this board at risk.

The state has already shut down and imprisoned website administrators for allowing the posting of bomb making materials (see the case of Sherman Austin).

Your so fucking stupid you don't realise that I couldn't give a shit who colluded with who to be honest, and the fact that you post this just goes to show that you think anyone who doesn't support your "movements" is de facto a supporter of the intelligence agencies etc etc of bourgeois capitalist states is just mindless nationalism. It wouldn't surprise me to be honest.... but I care more about the dead people to be honest... and their families. By the way, who put the fucking bomb there... this makes me laugh... the people who put the bomb there then blame the people who didn't come quick enough to get rid of the bomb... but, but, who fucking asked anyone to put a bomb anywhere that went onto to kill and injure innocent civilians?

Shit for brains.

But wait? When someone dared mention collusion with the CIA before it was all denounced as lies by these people who are now colluders?

The Norman "shilling"- so it wasn't De Valera who set him up?

Like all nationalists you live in a complete fantasy world created by yourself.

As for caring about the community- like the people of Omagh... plenty of working class people were victims, not that it should even matter.

Seeing as this is OI, and chatter- well---

You are a completely delusional idiotic jerk, you don't deserve to be restricted, you deserve to be banned outright. Apart from the fact that you are a blatant nationalist, you haven't got a fucking clue about leftist stances and your disagreements couldn't even be put down to sectarianism within the left, you posted a load of vile and racist anti-semitic shit all over my profile page and support progressive things like vigilante justice and the death penalty- let's add to the fact that you are a menace to RevLeft with your less than tacit celebrations of banned terrorist organisations which is expressly forbidden by RevLeft rules and if you have a problem with those rules take it up with Edelweiss.

Your comments on abortion were the least of the problem...

And blowing someone knees off after the fact changes what happens and makes it right again...

Derp.

I've heard the same sort of bullshit about the "old" mafia to be honest... but of course when it's someones else's children, women or whoever blown up or shot and killed it's a different story.

It's the worst kind of lumpen-reactionary anti-progressive bullshit. By the same token then you would have to support Loyalist/Unionist terrorism- afterall they're just "looking after their own community's interests"- and they're working class too.

I don't have a dog, so I'll tell you all about my girlfriend's dog, instead:

My girlfriend's dog is named Luna. 7-8 years ago, my girlfriend's mum saved Luna from a kennel in Mexico, sure that she had remembered her from a visit some weeks before. She took her home and gave her to my girlfriend (because every 18-year-old wants the responsibility of a dog on their shoulders ), and after a while it's now. She doesn't have a tail (it was already missing when she was in the kennel), so you can't see when she's happy. However, she's super-cute:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs1144.snc4/148692_10150090739789493_788149492_7145335_5842591 _n.jpg

She doesn't like water or squeaky noises, and if you command her 'shit!', she'll squat, and for a minute you'll think she's stupidly well-trained, until you realise she misheard you, and she's actually sitting. She's generally anglophone, but is also used to hearing 'Luna, mi amor!' and 'so ist fein'. Neither of these phrases are ever said to her in any other language. Also she's a vegan dog, and almost always eats people food. Not even just leftovers, my girlfriend often cooks dedicated food especially for her. I am sometimes lucky enough to get the same treatment, but I don't have to eat it from a bowl on the floor.

Also if the lead brushes her bum she'll stop, turn round and give you a look as if to say 'you touching my bum?!'

:tt1:

Mysterious radio waves emitted from nearby galaxy

13:13 14 April 2010

Update on 13 December 2010: The object is still a puzzle, says co-discoverer Tom Muxlow. "It was still there the last time we looked, so its lifetime is now well over a year," he says. "We are continuing to monitor this object."
There is something strange in the cosmic neighbourhood. An unknown object in the nearby galaxy M82 has started sending out radio waves, and the emission does not look like anything seen anywhere in the universe before.
"We don't know what it is," says co-discoverer Tom Muxlow of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (http://www.jodrellbank.manchester.ac.uk/) near Macclesfield, UK.
The thing appeared in May last year, while Muxlow and his colleagues were monitoring an unrelated stellar explosion in M82 using the MERLIN (http://www.merlin.ac.uk/about/layman/merlin.html) network of radio telescopes in the UK. A bright spot of radio emission emerged over only a few days, quite rapidly in astronomical terms. Since then it has done very little except baffle astrophysicists.
It certainly does not fit the pattern of radio emissions from supernovae: they usually get brighter over a few weeks and then fade away over months, with the spectrum of the radiation changing all the while. The new source has hardly changed in brightness over the course of a year, and its spectrum is steady.

Here's the topic. Which of the 'regulars' here in OI do you think would be most likely to find that a post they had made on RevLeft had been copy-pasted by a lazy journalist and printed in some newspaper or magazine? And, of course, tell us which newspaper or magazine it would be

That would be pretty funny- especially from threads where you're back pedaling out of a debate by posting nonsensical responses to legitimate questions and I think the overall collection would be about a page long and involve gems such as 'communism didn't work' - 'I can do whatever I want' - 'poor people are lazy' - 'my kids are doing fine why can't the poor people do fine too' and other assorted positions that have been explained several thousand times in great detail each week since you joined back in 2008.

I'm not sure I ever heard Bud say poor people were lazy, I may be wrong- I did hear him talk about his own immigrant Polish upbriging and how hard his father worked- he also apologised one time when he made a slightly derogatory remark, so there you go.

I have to deal occasionally with a lady associated with my work that I do not know too well, and she sent me a business email from her private email address today. I noticed that her name has the word "premiercru" in it, which is a snotty French wine term for "first growth."

I wrote her back, and at the end of my message, my curiosity all piqued, I typed: "What's with the premiercru in your name? Are you an onanist (http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definitions/onanist?cx=partner-pub-0939450753529744%3Av0qd01-tdlq&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=UTF-8&q=onanist&sa=Search#922)?

Thank god I checked the meaning before I hit the send button. I changed it to sommelier at the last second, which actually sounds worse to my ears than "onanist."

But the word I was actually thinking of was oenologist (http://www.oenologist.com/index.html).

So ... do you dismiss it when we suggest that communism is a religion? It seems more repressive and cultish and fantastic than anything I ever experienced in a church. Those are the most common vulgar epithets in the USA but I never hear the Brits say any of them. Language interests me, and so I'm really curious, not trolling or trying to offend anybody.

Still, if you ask me, you can't do much better than falling back on the classics, like 'schmuckface' Got a few friends from up Sheffield way at uni, though, and they love the way southerners say '****'. Don't know what's so special about it, but there's something.

On the subject of Yorkshire, I was once at a wedding in Leeds, and had to go to a cash point to pay for a few drinks at the bar. I asked for directions, and the woman mentioned a 'ginnel'. I just assumed it was the name of a shop or something, 'turn left at the Ginnel'...turns out it's just what those crazy northerners call an alleyway. Needless to say I ended up totally lost...

EDIT: @ Bud - that's because when we call somebody a bellend, we're just claiming that they're the end of one of these badboys:

It's funny, on RevLeft you can call a person a nasty name for a male genetalia (bellend) but not a female (c-word.) I find that sexist. It's because (apparently) the word '****' is used in America as a gendered insult in the same way as '*****', that is to say it's directed primarily or exclusively at women. Perhaps that's a regional thing, I don't know. It's certainly not true here in Britain but as this is an international site...

Robert
8th January 2011, 14:57
When Krimskrams said "southerners," I thought he meant these guys:

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwK0bASuErveUBShCrMmEKja1niRYcL 8HkUf1WVe_67pUKSqDM

That's me on the left, and my cousin Jim Bob, who is also my uncle and my grandfather, on the right.

And we never say "c--t." We say "You dumb sum*****! Day-um, boy! You don't know nuthin'. "

TheCultofAbeLincoln
8th January 2011, 15:57
I hardly ever use the c word because of it's degrading attributes (which it has in the US at least). The only time I have been known to is, like joe rogan says, as the magical word when a relationship is going bad and we're fighting and I'm unable to keep with her screaming so I drop the atomic bomb on her, "yeah, well, you're a fucking c---." Though I would warn anyone before using this, make sure you're bridges are burned before hand!!! This is the point of no return!

To me, the word is not a typical swear word like shit, fuck, or damn, but rather in a whole other category. The category it's in also includes words like "nigger" or "dyke" (as a slur against lesbians in case you're unfamiliar, not when used to describe a device which regulates a river like in the netherlands). I suppose that some might put the word "faggot" in that category but, though I'm trying, I use it not infrequently.

I think that category should be called "Comon expressions in the american south" haha (tho to split from Roberts joke those words are used everywhere there are uneducated proles around lol)

Me, Mari3l, Bud, Ferret, and CM.

You, Hayet and others are Minor Characters.

No offense, but if you can't hit a stationery target with a shotgun, I don't know if you should be teaching the course.

If it's a stationery target, you aim the shotgun. If moving, you "point."

I tried to post the link to this post, consistent with what I know, but the link doesn't work:

For deer hunting and serious social activities, the shotgun should be treated as a rifle and the front sight should be the focus. Wingshooting or target shooting is difference because the target is moving quickly and keeping a focus on the target allows the shooter's natural computer to take into account target direction, speed and distance. In this case, the eye acts as the rear sight and the barrels are in your peripheral vision. If while wingshooting you look at your barrels, your gun automatically slows down. Our eyes don't cope very well with two planes of focus at the same time.

This explains why a gun that fits and shoots to where you are looking is one of the keys to successful shotgunning.

Yeah it's pretty crazy. It was some Pulp Fiction shit where it seemed like I was aiming just fine then I pulled the trigger and nothing showed up on the paper.

This was on the pistol course, again. REAL close.

But I'm a decent shot on a rifle. I can hit the paper with a handgun but the spread is usually bad.

And I think all an instructor needs is to know range safety so idiots don't point loaded guns in every direction and sprint down to see what they hit while other people are shooting.

How about posts by anyone regarding the racist imperialistic agenda of corporate pigs and their stooges in the Congress and their attack dogs in the military? These people are only tolerated on the main boards really. They're there but, yeah, only tolerated.

I'm in Southern California for gods sake, and I wont deploy before I leave the army. I don't see how anything you ever said really challenges anything we think about the military. They get sent out to fight people a world away for dumb reasons because that is just what a military does. People in the military get grief for it because it's a voluntary thing and some other reasons that are dumb.

I think people are kind of wrong to go after individual soldiers though, because obviously not every single person in the army is some idiot who wants to kill people, even though that's kind of in the job description some of the time. To be honest I myself have a lot of antipathy towards soldiers but I recognize it and maintain that even though the military, like the rest of the state in capitalism, is a bad thing, people involved in it can be good people or can be won over or whatever.

It's an Ibanez (I think) Mikro bass. Basically a travel bass, but it's excellent to practice on because the strings aren't the ones they use to hold up suspension bridges. Like this? Sounds decent. You made it sound like a $40 Chinese job that was barely playable or something. He could perform with this if he wanted to:

Ha, no. I thought it would have been. But I forget that my dad sort of knows guitars.

To be honest I don't think I'd worry too much about a cheap guitar. What I'm more worried about is one of my parents paying way, way too much for a cheap guitar, which they did a lot back when I was playing trombone in school. I remember they once bought me a trombone for $150 (a red flag for a brass instrument) that was totally unplayable. I felt kind of bad explaining to them all the things on it that were messed up that made it useless. I felt even worse because they really didn't need to buy one at all. For expensive instruments like that, the school lets you borrow them.

EDIT: That's the exact bass, by the way. It's a great little instrument. Comes with an amp and everything.

Your little brother ... is he practicing? Learning anything on it?

I have a cousin who switched from guitar to bass a few years ago and always has gigs. Of course he sings like an angel, so there's no shortage of club and party bands that are calling him to work. He's sort of fundamentalist, I think an ordained minister, and doesn't drink, which creates tension between us. I play Jerry Lee Lewis to his Jimmy Swaggart.

You understand?

Good for him.

Man you guys oughta see my kitchen right now. I destroy it every time I drink, cause I like to pull stuff outta the fridge "hey this might be good mixed with that."

From left to right, no b.s., here's what you'd see:

an open jar of garlic mustard, a 3/4 empty bottle of Fin du Monde, a half eaten apple, a hunk of swiss cheese on a cutting board (I'll make my way over there eventually), some of those Wasa light rye crackers in the box, a bag of apples, the stems of some kale I bought and steamed, a bowl of kale I'm gonna eat later, a half cup of tea I brewed before I rememberd I had beer, a tortilla cooking in the skillet with some green onions and shredded cheddar, a tub of butter, the box of shreded chees, and a hal opn bag of tortilla,s You basidid.

Well, night time is great.

You're really in London? I went to a theater production there a few years ago and sometimes I feel I should never have left. Great city.

I live in Dullsville, but I don't care. We got great beer and wine from everywhere in the world right down the street, and I don't worry too much about getting shot or stabbed.

London's the place to be, I tell you. I was unfortunate enough to spend a year living in Finland, and that was just hell. Compared to London...it's just unbelievably small and slow and everything. I almost wanted to shout at random people in the street, 'why aren't you stressed, why aren't you in a rush, what are you doing?!' So I don't think I'd be able to function in some tiny rural whatever town, unless there was something to really keep me occupied. Though I always thought the big city was the kind of place you'd have to be born into to really appreciate. It's easy to get overwhelmed if one is used to a little town, and see the big city as a temporary place to live in during ones youth, but experience has told me that I'd have to be pulled out kicking and screaming! Though I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, 'for the good of the children' or something, when they come along...

Strange how I say this, though, whilst my political ideology calls for...rural communes! Hmm...might need to reassess one of the two

Not to get into it--but the guy from the Middle East in question is an Athiest. It was meant as a hollow insult. "Your mother wears combat boots."

Oh, shoot, I wanted to mention this earlier and now I feel bad bringing it up again but like I said, it has nothing to do with what his religion is. A member got in some trouble not long ago for referring to the Irish as alcoholics and pedophiles, in reference to the Catholic church and the Irish being stereotypically Catholic.

The reason I thought the infraction was fair was because it was based on the stereotype that arab = muslim, which obviously isn't true.

So yeah I looked at it as more an ethnic thing, which you probably didn't and didn't intend but yeah.

He wasn't probably as bad as he was made out to be, largely by his German (?) enemies and detractors- in Romania he is a national hero for fighting off the Ottoman Turks and all that stuff. Not to say that he was progressive or anything either- but they respect his time as a rule of law and order- the wells had golden cups to drink with and no one dared steal them. But yeah, medieval monarchs were a tough team at the end of the day.

@Robert: I think it depends on your security settings. I mean, I'm no expert, but I think it's possible to click whether or not one can access your albums or not, merely by typing in something like photobucket.com/username. This could be deduced from the picture, if we right-click it. I would suggest you use Tinypic (http://tinypic.com/), where you can upload specific pictures, and they'll host them for you. As there's no need to have a username or anything, nobody could then link your uploads together. So if you have a picture you want to post here on the forums, I'd suggest you upload it there...for safety's sake :)

One of the big problems with RevLeft is that there's too much talk around here about politics and not enough about food. Thanks to ComradeMan we had this last night:

Baccala!!!

Salted Cod ( About 1/2 Pound Prepared Per Person)
1 (28)oz can of Crushed Tomatoes ( I prefer Pomi Brand)
3 Cloves of garlic Minced
1 Small Onion, Finely Chopped
1 Stalk of Celery Finely Chopped
1 Carrot, Chopped
3 Tbs. Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper (Add Salt Only At The End If Needed!)
1 Bay Leaf
Pinch of Red Pepper Flakes
Fresh Parsley
Polenta:
9 Cups of Cold Water
2 Tablespoons Salt
2 Cups Cornmeal

Prepare the baccala by soaking in the refrigerator in fresh water for two days prior to cooking, changing the water three times a day. Rinse, and pull out any bones with tweezers, and cut into pieces.
To make the sauce heat the olive oil in a medium sized saucepan and add the onion and carrot. Cook until tender, and then add the garlic. Cook only 1 minute and add the tomatoes and seasonings to the pot. Stir well, and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 30 minutes.
While the sauce is cooking, begin to prepare the polenta. Bring the water to boil in a separate pot over medium heat. Add the salt and reduce the heat to medium low. Once the water is simmering, slowly start pouring in the cornmeal in a thin stream, stir constantly to prevent lumps. Once all the cornmeal has been added, keep the mixture at a slow simmer and cook stirring occasionally until soft, about 30-40 minutes. Place a large scoop in each serving bowl and let sit 5 minutes.
After the tomato sauce has cooked for 30 minutes. add the cod to the sauce and simmer for an additional 20 minutes. Check for seasonings and serve over each bowl of polenta, garnished with fresh parsley.

It was great.

Further after dinner the nuclear fam and I watched our usual Saturday Night Movie--this week it was little Dyptheria Struggle's pic--Julia and Julie. OK movie, a bit of a chick flick--but the woman in the movie cooked all of the recipies in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in a year. We have the book and it has some first rate cooking--but it is difficult. Mwe have made some of the recipies (the roast chicken is great) but It's a strech for regular cooking. Anyway before church this morning I went over some of her other cookbooks and really liked From the Kitchen of Julia Child as her probably most interesting and informative book that is cookable on a regular basis. I may start working through the book.

So I'm starting with recipe #1 Leek and Potato soup.

I went to roller derby last night. I have never been to a lesbian rally, but I'm pretty sure it looks a lot like a roller derby.

It was actually really great, watching girls get pulled to the ground by their hair and whatnot. My friend from NJ was so trashed he started fist pumping the air like a moron while myself and newfound friends mocked him incessantly.

There was a guy roller skating at a rink that I saw a few years ago. Everyone had blades except him. They seemed to have real high quality leathers. He said he paid $300 for them years ago. I hope they were comfortable because they sure were slow. Little kids were skating rings around him.

We don't actually use basil and oregano as much as people think but I notice the perception of Italian food is always add garlic, oregano and basil and it becomes "Italian"!!! LOL!!! But then it depends on the region and your mother's, mother's, mother's recipe and everything too! ;)

Yea, salted and dried like a board. You have to really and truly soak it in water for a couple of days or else you are eating the ocean. It has a really different texture and flavor than fresh cod.

As far as oregino and basil--my wife (who is Italian) doesn't use it anywhere near as much as I do. This recipe is right in line with the way she cooks. Also, this isn't a spagetti sauce, it's something that just adds t the fish dinner. More of a "gravy on turkey" feel to it.
