Since quite a few people like Tupac, what other rap artists is everyone in to?

Legends
27th August 2003, 14:24
Not into them but I liked songs by them

Missy Elliot
Nas only one song
Eminem
Jay Z and Beyonce Knowles, Crazy In love
Wu Tang only one or two

Iv'e spouted off lists before of my old school favourites...Schooly D, Flash, Melle Mell, Afrika Bambaata, etc...

In the corner for England right now has to be Roots Manuva - he's a bad bitty, and the Cuban "Orishas" are amazing. U.S wise Gangstarr's new thing is nice and the Roots latest was cool. Hip Hop's in a weird place right now, most of it is pure pop, Hip pop if you will, fuck all the bling bling... Let's go back to the daisyage....

The video for Roots Manuva's song is wicked! Pity I forget the name of the song....the one where he goes back to his old school for the sports day.

I used to listen to nothing but hip hop, then I heard too much reggae, and hip hop sounds kind of immature to my ears now. I prefer real instruments, and analogue recordings.

I was a big fan of anything released on Rawkus. They were the men.

"Witness the fitness", Cthenthar is correct...I can't think of a chunkier crunchier Hip Hop tune from 2001 that can match it... I like the way he raps about beans on toast...and jerk chicken and fish while sounding like the meanest mother in town... Most U.S stuff is complacent these days, even Rawkus went off the boil.

What about turntabalists? Peanut butter wolf, Shadow, scratch perverts etc...

Inti; do you have any more info on the Chilean rap? Album names etc...

Hmm... I'm sure this is missing a few.

Aesop Rock
Deltron 3030/Gorillaz
Dead Prez
Dr. Octagon
RJD2
Living Legends
Wu-Tang Clan
The Coup
Blackalicious
Lifesavas
Freestyle Fellowship
Cypress Hill
Atmosphere
Jurassic 5
Nas
Swollen Members
The Roots
KRS-One
The Transplants (do they count?)
Zion I
Cannibal Ox
Outkast
Rappin 4-Tay
Company Flow
Snoop Dogg
Black Star

I think that's about it. I like individual artists from the groups I've mentioned, of course. I prefer Talib Kweli to Mos Def, I think Murs is the best Living Legend, Aceyalone (of Freestyle Fellowship) rocks, and I don't really prefer any of the Wu-Tang members, they all have their own appeal.

Let's see... The people on the list who I've seen live are: Del, Aceyalone, Lifesavas, Blackalicious, Talib Kweli, Rahzel, Dead Prez, and Atmosphere.

Oh, and I left out all the Italian rap (http://www.italianrap.com) I listen to; in all likelihood, none of you will have heard of any of them.

Inti;

I'm in London mostly but travel and work in Spain quite a bit.... She's not a rap artist but "Susana Baca" is who I meant - she has a very funky album..Now that I think of it she may be Peruvian not Chilean...Afro-Peruvian...Check her out if you like funky/soulful beats...

Yeah I'm definatley with you, Spanish language Rap adds a new dimension to Hip Hop which it desperatley needs...

Ahhhhhh, Susana Baca:D Yes, I know about her.. I like that music too.. My wife is Peruvian and I like most of the things there. A music style called musica criolla is really cool.. I found some music last night that I hadnt heard before and I have to add them to my list.. Nach Scratch, Chojin and Falsa Alarma.. :D I had almost stopped to listen to rap in english before I saw this thread and some others in here.. Of english speaking rap I favor The Sweatshop Union and Dead Prez.. But Im almost dying in trying to get some music in Swahili, a group called Kalamashaka. I really like the beat..

It's not about being hypocritical, there's many sides to people that is an example of his. If someone was to say that Tupac is a moral man, I would not know what they meant. He was not an angel in life, he did bad things, he shot two cops, he smoked drugs, he had lots of sex with diffrent women, and cursed in his music. But having fueds and slagging people in your raps is part of hip hop, it has and always will be.

Theres some real revolutionary themed rap. Mos def, talib kweli, public enemy, krs one.. theres tonnes of the shit.

Tupac's mum was a panther so he had that side to him. He was also into the gangster and ego shit. You can hear the pain of growing up in the streets and what the cops do and all that shit.

Mof def - new world water is a good song bout ... u guessed it water.

The Sloth
21st August 2004, 03:57
Hip-hop is definitely my favorite genre of music.

Talib Kweli - can't go wrong here...he's basically the man that got me into underground hip-hop in the first place. Best track of all time -- "For Women"...never heard anything like it.

Mos Def - one-half of Black Star (other half being Talib Kweli), one of my favorite artists, ever.

Ras Kass - damn, while he's nothing special now, back when he released "Soul On Ice," no one could really touch him. Can't front on this one, this cd got me into politics after picking up a book of the same title when I heard it.

Canibus - I can say with honesty, with no hesitation in my voice, and with no reason to "catch myself," that Canibus is the best rapper to ever pick up a microphone, whether dead or alive, whether it's 2004 or 1982. I have never heard a battle against another emcee as powerful as "Second Round K.O.," and nor did I ever hear a verse better than "Poet Laureate II" or "Beasts from the East." Never has a guest appearance been as good as "4, 3, 2, 1" and never did another rapper shine on a track that featured Canibus. Simply unbelievable.

Aceyalone - if you ever heard a flow better than Aceyalone's, I'd definitely want to hear it. Whether he's rapping solo or with Freestyle Fellowship, he brings out the best of the West Coast. One of the top ten hip-hop releases, in my opinion, is "All Balls Don't Bounce." No track is "bad," which is rare, even for a classic. One song is called "Makeba," which is the most brilliant songs on a sour relationship I have ever heard in my life...the beat changes with a hint of maliciousness in Acey's voice, although his flow is top-notch throughout the entire thing. The choice of words is incredible. Even damn music reviewers that love this CD can't get it right....I cringed today when I was reading some review that said that Aceyalone was "attempting to get back with an old love," which ruins the entire purpose of the song. Ugh!

So, those are my "Big Five." And, of course, with me, that means those are the five best lyricists I ever heard.

The rest I listen to are,

Common (Sense) - he's also a "Top Five Lyricist" to me, although I didn't include him on the list. A "top-ten release" was in "Resurrection" from '94.....incredible style and lyrics.

Nas - can't go wrong with "Illmatic"

Main Source - "Breaking Atoms" is another "Illmatic"....although not as good ;)

Illogic - check out "Unforseen Shadows" -- a "top ten lyricist"

Louis Logic
Dead Prez
Public Enemy
Rakim

Blackalicious - check "NIA" and "Blazing Arrow"...extremely lyrical, very conscious. I'd put Gift of Gab (the emcee of the group) as a "top ten lyricist"

Immortal Technique - ehh, overrated, but I still check him every now and then

A Trible Called Quest
K-Os
Company Flow
Cee-Lo
AZ

Lauryn Hill - she released my favorite album of all time...guess what that is ;)

The Fugees - overrated....the only good verses come from Lauryn Hill, but still a good listen overall

Jean Grae - female emcee extraordinare

Souls of Mischief
De La Soul

Tupac - beyond overrated, but still a good listen

Hieroglyphics - can't name you any songs, but I listen to a lot of tracks from them...they're alright, they're alright..

Organized Konfusion - really one of the best rap groups ever....while Outkast can't be touched on the hits and the creativity, Organized Konfusion can't be touched on the lyrics. Pharoahe Monch has incredible flow.

Well, that's about it. I have more, but can't remember anything else :)

Very true about Prez, my one problem with him is that hes blatently racist, and that kinda bumps him down in my books alittle.

To touch on another thing I read, about hip-hop going into the bling-bling era, also very true, in mainstream. But man, you gotta dig through the music. There is so much amazing music in the hip-hop world waiting to be discovered in "underground hip-hop". I don't want to relist lots but here are some people I dont think were mentioned:
