View Full Version : Do you shave with or against the grain?

This is a very important question that should be answered with the utmost seriousness.

I prefer to shave against the grain (when I do shave) because...

1) it feels more comfortable, and...

2) I can never get all the hairs going with it.

I'm sure with us all being the epic communists we are, we all grow big bushy beards like Marx, but we have all shaved in our lifetime. How to you do it?

I go against the grain, but that's on my legs, underarms, etc. since I don't have facial hair, and it would make shaving more difficult to go with the grain. Isn't it less effective to go with the grain anyway?

I find its less effective if you go with the grain. The downsides of going with it though is you can get ingrown hairs and your more prone to cutting yourself.

I imagine shaving your face must be quite hard. Any part of me that isn't smooth (such as ankles or knees) always ends up getting cut when I shave, and the face seems as though it would be way more awkward.

the only thing that makes shaving my face awkward is that i have a mole on the side of my chin that sticks out of the skin just enough to make me have to maneuver around it for a good minute so i don't cut it off.

Anyone ever cut a mole? I mean where does all that blood come from?

With, don't get cut or ingrown hairs.. probably got it from woodworking, you never go against the grain ;)

It's really not very hard at all. Maybe you're just clumsy.

Against. Always have, always will, and I've never had a problem like others I know have. Plus, when you go against, it makes for a smoother shave and the ladies like it. ;) (Although I usually keep a bit of stubble here and there.)

Well what I do, is first I go with the grain(putting plenty of shaving cream of course) and when I am down, I then go for a second run over my face against the grain. It proves pretty effective. I don't think I've ever cut myself either, probably from using shaving cream since it helps shit loads.

I shave in both directions. So I'm extra smooth.

I shave against since it gives me a much closer shave. I got to exfoliate though cause shaving that way can cause ingrown hairs.

It's wicked easy.

I usually go with the grain. Works fine.

With, mostly.

The neck is a bastard to shave, but making sure it's clear of hair is of great importance.

You wouldn't be wrong there. I am pretty clumsy.

Depends on the thickness of the hairs and the sensitivity of the underlying skin.

when conquering the neck beard, I shave against the grain, as that particular area of hair is a bastardly opponent to the razor, which will not respond with a shave with the grain.

for the moustachial region and the rest of my face, I go with the grain, and it comes off a treat.

also, with regards to neck beards, I have an area under my chin in which no hair ever grows, so if i was to ever grow a beard, i'd have a permanent bald spot amidst it.

because my 'beard' looks as if i stuck a load of fucking pubic hairs to my face with some pvc glue.

Maybe because, no matter how badass a big bushy beard may look, facial hair really isn't that attractive.

Alright, in this case I guess you are excused.

Now, now! Would you honestly prefer Karl Marx without his beard???

To come back to "the utmost seriousness": the parts of my face I don't want facial hair to grow are shaved like Sizzurp Boy suggests: in both directions!

My friend saw that picture and said, "That's not Karl Marx. Marx was born with a beard!"

I don't know what it is about beards/facial hair, but it's just unattractive to me, and feels weird on my face when I kiss a bearded man.

I don't like kissing guys with beards. It scratches. :(
Other than that I think beards look good, but I've stopped myself from growing one because it makes me feel unclean.

Better to wax your chest in my opinion. It takes longer to grow back.

It also doesn't grow back in such a stubbly way. I can never be bothered with the effort of waxing (my legs) and the last time I tried to wax somewhere more sensitive I made it bleed horribly, so I'm going to stick with the razor for the time being.

I've never had much issues with bleeding. I mainly stress about ingrown hairs which makes me spend money on exfoliating products. Shaving is probably a bit more cost effective..

Quail
7th January 2011, 05:31
If you're waxing your chest, the skin is fairly taut so it's probably not that difficult. I can do my legs fine. It's just other, more sensitive areas that I find more difficult.

I hate those areas just beneath the chin-bones, stupid inward concave area. (Or is it a convex area?)
