Thinking about this recently especially in relation to the Iranian Communist party and the PDPA in Afghanistan and the communist parties in Palestine, but also how popular is Libertarian Socialism , Anarchism etc.

As I understand it, though such generalizations are rarely useful, communism has anti-imperialism appeal (Che is big), and some anti-usury appeal. I'm sure there are probably polls about this, but I'd wager that a desire for a new Caliphate is way more popular.

Among middle eastern intellectuals it is very popular.

However, among the masses, it's not, due to

1. State Oppression.

3. Lack of Education

2. Lack of actually knowing what it is.

Going back to what one comrade hinted, is Che is really popular in the Middle East? I saw his image a lot among the younger student protestors in Iran.

Che is very popular all around the Third World. If you look at the PFLP propaganda video that freepalestine posted in the Situation in Palestine board, one of the fighters is wearing a Che shirt.

Red Future, by "Islamic states," do you mean formally/legally Islamic states or just countries with Muslim majorities? There used to be support for communism in Muslim countries - Yemen, Egypt, Afghanistan are just a few - but support has steadily or precipitously declined, and now political Islam is predominant. Part of political Islam's appeal, at least at the organizational and not state levels (although in some cases, at the state level as well, e.g. Iran), is the opposition to imperialism. Of course elites eventually get cozy with imperialism, but at early stages they don't. Fanon gives an analysis of how colonizers seek out elites within the colonized population (I mention that because I'm now reading Wretched of the Earth).

I was thinking mainly on the lines of the former but also the latter too
