This evening, the policeman of the Dias motorcycle police force who ran over and killed a 6-year old girl (http://www.occupiedlondon.org/blog/2011/01/05/462-policeman-of-the-dias-motorcycle-force-runs-over-and-kills-6-year-old-girl/) in the Aspropyrgos area of Athens, appeared before a prosecutor general and was released on bail. This, despite the claims of locals that he abandoned his victim – a victim he personally denies.

A policeman of the “DIAS” motorcycle police ran over a 6-year old roma girl in the area of Menidi in NE Athens. According to eye-witnesses, the six-year old girl was run over as she was on the streets, where she was signing the carols with other children (in Greece, children sing carols on the eve of the Epiphany day, Jan 6). The eye-witnesses also claim the policeman dragged the girl along for 150 meters and did not stop to offer any help.
The policeman who killed the girl is at the nearby police station of Nea Ionia, yet his status is yet unclear. Around 100 people gathered at the spot of the assassination and attacked the riot police once the news of the girl’s death broke out.
UPDATE, 17.10 GMT+2. Mainstream media report that the policeman who assassinated the 6-year old girl has been arrested and will appear before the prosecutor general tonight. Meanwhile, police have apparently retreated from the Menidi area in a bid to calm the situation down.

This is going to end up bad if that cop gets off with no punishment... and even then, with the situation that Greece is in right now, I can see all hell breaking loose in the near future.

Although the fact its an roma girl will sadly probably mean the outrage will only be an fraction of what it would be if it was an Greek girl.

Notice the automatic reaction of the police this time? They immediately abandoned the area. They've learnt.

And Psycho, you beat me to it by posting this.

I don't think it'll be that much more significant between the two. There'll be hell raised over this, surely. Though, I seriously doubt the cop will get away with this. It's too big of a situation with too many eyewitnesses not to convict him. They'll convict him to try and calm down everyone.

That is true. But if the politzei have no problem killing a Roma girl, then whats to say that they will have any remorse when they kill a Greek girl who's a daughter of a protester? All in all, brutal actions like these are the ones that result in cities being burned to heaps of ash...

The situation if the kid was greek i am pretty sure it would be totally different. No one should expect December 2008 reactions, as obviously cases are different, but still reactions are and will be lot less than if that happened to local kid, and its sad to seeing that really.

As for the situation, its not just cop thing, sadly this things happen every day and everyone should be careful on the fucking streets, lots of idiots drive the roads like they are on their own and taking innocent peoples lifes.

Now on cops punishment, i am with the idea he will get away with it sadly...

For the most part I agree with this. They will likely claim that the cop left the scene without helping the victim because of some immediate threat to their life. I think this is a much different situation being a hit and run than the events in 2008.

No hell was or is going to be raised. A much as we all hate the cops, the incident was an accident, so even if you push it to the limit, it doesnt say much. Dont lose your sleep waiting for another December.

#464 | Demonstrations called in response to the police killing of a 6-year old girl in Athens

On Tuesday January 5th a 6-year old girl was killed (http://www.occupiedlondon.org/blog/2011/01/05/462-policeman-of-the-dias-motorcycle-force-runs-over-and-kills-6-year-old-girl/), ran over by a DIAS motorcycle policeman who was subsequently released pending the police investigation (http://www.occupiedlondon.org/blog/2011/01/05/463-dias-motorcycle-policeman-who-ran-over-and-killed-6-year-old-girl-is-set-free-on-bail/). In response to the killing and immunity offered to the policeman, an impromptu anarchist demonstration was held in the Northern city of Thessaloniki, while an information gathering was held in the city of Larisa and a demonstration was called in the city for 4 pm tomorrow. It is possible (though yet unconfirmed) that similar actions might be called for other cities – including Athens itself.
