Which apple is the best: red or green. I say green, because red is for communists.

Red are nice, they keep a good about of sweetness but not too much. Green apples are very sweet almost a kind ouf sour sweet. They're good for when, your fruit basket is extinct of red apples.

I generally prefer green, but red are good too. I think pears are better than apples though.

The color doesn't matter, just the flavor and texture. For eating out of hand I usually prefer a red Gala or Fuji, or a yellow Mutsu. I do love the green Golden Delicious, and a nice tart green Granny Smith is really good once in a while, too.
It depends on what you're using them for, too. Gala is great for munching or putting in salad, but not so much for making pie. Rome is good for applesauce, but not good in pies. Golden Delicious is excellent for pie. Granny Smith, too. Fuji is great raw or for applesauce or pie.
For cooking or juicing or putting in salad I like to mix tart and sweet, but I'll use two or three Fuji for every Granny Smith.

As long as they're crunchy, tasty and not powdery, I'm not fussed.

Powdery? I never knew a apple could be "powdery"? Maybe it's something English, and I just don't understand your definition of powdery? What is this "powdery" you speak of?

Maybe it's when apples are a bit past it, but instead of sweet, juicy flesh, sometimes there isn't much juice and the flesh crumbles unsatisfactorily when you take a bite.
