Who would stop workers from keeping what they produced, and not giving according to need?

When Marx and Engels refer to the state, they refer to it AS IT EXISTS TODAY... read The State and the Revolution. There would be, at first, a dictatorship of the proletariat, and the state would not "wither away" until that sort of problem was ironed out. Eventually, the community would probably enforce that rule...

If people are doing that then there's probably some other problems with the way things are going.

That doesn't mean that we shouldn't address the potential problem

What would they do with it? If they produce furniture, are they going to construct castles out of loveseats? Will bakers eat cake upon cake? Should I anticipate writers crafting epic novels and then...burning them? I don't expect workers to suddenly keep everything they make, especially considering they would produce more than those workers would need. But, if the problem does arise, I suppose the community would do something about it. If you aren't putting anything into the system, you won't be guarenteed to get anything out of it.

I agree with all of these responses. I would say that that is a more of a sociological problem. Communism will take a long time to come about, and I imagine that after generation after generation of living in a post-capitalist society, social norms and customs will change immensely from what they are today. It seems like it might even be unthinkable for people to want to betray each other like that and take stuff out of want instead of need.

It is interesting to think of what societal norms will be... especially in terms of how they can improve the world. Imagine if the power of societal pressures was applied in the right way... we could create a much better future

There will be people in communist societies who try to do stupid shit like this. There will be people who attempt to seize power. I would imagine the communities would prevent something like this from happening - but who wants to hoard lamps for themselves? What will you do with them?

Absolutely. Only time will tell.

"With all of these lamps, I will be able to topple communism and bring back capitalism! Bwhahaha!"
