Seriously, don't you know that it's good to give thanks?
I'm thinking of two posters in particular who are fairly well-respected advocates of their ideologies. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. What, you think that you're somehow above the petty echo chambers of individuals thanking posts that only agree with their narrow worldviews, or e-peen rep contests? Got news for you: you're not. You're posting on RevLeft. You need to start wallowing with the swine.

Personally I think "thanks" along with rep has pretty much ruined this forum, but it is sometimes useful to express the high one gets when one reads a post with which one agrees overwhelmingly.

Nah, you'd better stroke mine, as my e-peen is far bigger than yours. Perhaps some of my glory will rub off on you.

Ruining Revleft? Isn't that like divorcing a bachelor?

If the bachelor played World of Warcraft twelve hours a day, then yes.

I think the rep system played a factor a while back in getting me to stay.
Not anymore, yet I still can't find a way not to stay on revleft.
I need a life.

There is a far more widespread problem. People not thanking my posts.

Rep points are a bourgeois extravagance. This issue has been explored in the past. You can all read my gem of a comment on page two.

Yeah, well, I think that it's because you only post in Chit Chat, and we can't thank your posts here.

Probably because people think you can sway your words better if you have more rep points. I personally think if your that easily affected by it, you shouldn't be here.

Nah man, I'm not talking about me...I've already put in my time with a good 2,000+ posts outside of Shit Chat. I'm talking about all of the up-and-comers out there.

What's with people who complain about the presence of a rep system?
I think that having a thanks/rep system to encourage good posts really just encourages people to post for thanks/rep, in a sort of dopamine-reward-motivation cycle. Not all the time, and there's overlap, of course.

What's with people who complain about the presence of a rep system?
Some people are longing for the good old days. It was a simpler time.
Truthfully it annoys me when people thank posts with little to no value beyond demeaning someone who they disagree with and who the majority of the members disagree with. People are far more reluctant to give thanks to posts that confirm their world view and their biases than they are to thank well thought out posts that contradict what they believe or destroy their paradigm even if the post has great supporting evidence or proves their ideas to be faulty. But I actually don't care about whether or not we have rep. I'm not opposed to it and I'm not interested in fighting against it. I do however want everyone to know that reputation is bourgeois extravagance. That much has not changed.

I only thank people when either I strongly agree with them or when they make an important contribution. Over-thanking people cheapens it.

It seems that not only I do, but everyone else does to. I have only just noticed this thread, but basically Anarion is right. You could have sent me a PM and I would have replied.
When they first started the 'rep' system, which was what they had before thanks, and their were all of these threads saying "let's give each other rep", it just struck me as something that I didn't really want to get into.
I don't quite understand why people get so het up about it.
If I like what somebody says, I write in the thread that I agreed (which I did today), or send them a pm, which I also did today. I think it is a bit more personal than just pressing a tab.
