It's tie between first and third for me, but I like third-wave ska best.

I assume he means first wave as in the original ska that was Jamaican folk music, then second wave as in the popular ska bands during the 70's and 80's, then third wave as the cross of pop-rock and ska that happened in the 90's/2000's.
I'm not exactly a ska aficionado though, so I might be wrong.

I can never pick favorites for things, but as far as ska musicians I listen to, the vast majority full under the first and second waves.

While I like the Jamaican stuff that you guys called "first wave", I still think that 2Tone mastered the sound perfectly and blended the old stuff perfectly with the new inventions at the time. I think that "new" ska lost its original value, and it's mostly considered and "that funny dancing music", such is the case with, say, Ska P. It sounds like circus music to me from time to time.
Also note that the oldies had some pretty misogynist and homophobic lyrics.

basicly, although its more style related than decade, an contempary band like the toasters would be on age an 3th wave band but is stil in my view an 2nd wave band. and an band like "rude-rich and the highnotes" their current stuff i would even call 1st wave. there are also shades of gray as ska bands tend to perform for ever and colebrate alot. so the specials for example made records with both joe strummer (very two tone) but also with rancid while the rancid ska songs are very 3th wave.
1st wave: very reagea like. big names: skatalites, prince buster etc etc. main label: trojan records
2nd wave: own distinctive sound but more pop/punky like. madness, specials, selecter, the beat. main label: 2 tone
3th wave: very crossover. operation ivy, ska-p, voodoo glow skulls. label lots but inc hellcat

I like old ska and 2tone. I don't mind 3rd wave, but it has too much of a generic pop-punk influence for my liking.

Damn all you purists to hell.
Ska-punk-circus music like Ska-p and Babylon circus is the way to go!

Well, the truth is you anarchists were always fond of juggling balls instead a political statement, so why not circus music for background? :)

Despite my little joke at the start (which i think is good enough for rep :glare:) I like first and second wave ska, though only in small doses and not nearly as much as I once did.

I prefer Second wave. Third wave is alright and most of the first wave stuff I've heard is pretty good too.
