Utilitarianism is an ethical philosophy that asserts that the word "good" is defined as that which brings about the greatest amount of long-term happiness to the greatest number of people. It was developed by Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. If people are utilitarians, they can still disagree about what things are good, but instead of disagreeing based on interpretations of God's commandments or some other traditional reasons, they would be disagreeing because they make different estimates about which alternatives maximize the long-term happiness for people.
